The Official Xiaomi Thread

Congrats did you get 6gb/128gb and what was the cost incl shipping and customs?

I paid R4050 in all with a GB coupon for that item. Think I can get about R130 coupon for future if I post a review with videos and other tasks.

Mine came in at R4214.67. which includes 2 extra screen protectors and a screenprotector with metal frame for the camera in the rear (along with the insurance). The shipment was split however so still waiting for those.
Without the extra stuff it was exactly the same as Vis1/0N. R538 for customs.
And yes, 6gb/128gb variant.

I'm looking at a mi 9 as an upgrade from a p10. Meets most of my needs, with wireless charging being a huge plus. Any feedback on if this is a decent upgrade?

I will update once I receive mine. Coming from Galaxy S8 I am excited to see how it shapes up. And yes. Wireless charging was pretty much one of the deal breakers for me between the normal Mi9 and the Mi9T Pro.

Shipped already and expected by the end of the week. Problem is that I am out of office from Thursday till next week Tuesday. so chances are I am only going to be putting it to the test from Wednesday.

I can grab one on special for 400 euros for 6/128gb and won't have to pay shipping or customs as a family member will bring it down at the end of the month, so I'm tempted to grab one now Gearbest and other options worked out a bit more and the cheapest I could find it locally was for around 7.5k.

How's the hands-on experience?

Feedback on Redmi 8 4gb/64gb

Can confirm it does come with a clear see through case and a screen protector as well. Abit heavy as i normally use a small light phone. Very light at like 113 grams - so the redmi 8 at 188g feels monstrous. It's an okay phone. No issues thus far - has handled whatever I've thrown at it however I can't help but think they paired a weak CPU with lots of storage and ram to even the odds. 4gb/64gb is nice but I feel like the phone is somewhat sluggish at times. Installed Pubg mobile and quality on that was much lower than i expected. I have been using an iPhone SE and still do so maybe the smoothness of iOS and 2gb ram on a small screen and phone have spoilt me

Fast charging is a nice addition and fingerprint reader works fast. Took the phone off the charger this morning at 5am. Installed apps galore and just tried to push it and see if it falls apart. Load shedding hit and phone soldiered on streamed music via bluetooth etc - not a scientific test. At 2pm as of this writing I am at 64% battery life.

To sum it up it's a neat monstrous phone that one could get used to easily. The storage, ram and especially battery life are it's saving grace. Fingerprint reader, fast charging, face unlock (not yet tested) and USB c type charging rounds it off nicely. Looks wise its quite good compared to the other redmis in my view.

^ Feedback on the Redmi 8 ^

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I expect the extra heft comes from the larger battery.

It's kinda nice to have a case and screen protector included in the box, really good value for money from this brand.

yea I am even considering it for the extra screen estate, battery life and to try the android experience again. Just not sure what a drastic change it will be - but yea i am now hesitantly looking at android for my next phone. Not because I am dissatisfied with iOS but curious to try android again and see how well it has aged since I switched.

Got my Note 8 Pro today. Big and solid!

Got a software update already - assuming that's just because the phone's shipped software is already out of date.

Did NOT get a screen cover with the phone - ordered from Amazon, if that makes a difference? Did get a very nice phone cover, though.

Only had a few hours to play with it, but so far:

Pros:
1. Display is big and beautiful
2. Phone is more than capable enough to handle everything I've thrown at it.
3. MIUI is less intrusive than I thought - saw others complaining about ads and tons of bloatware - haven't seen a single ad so far, and uninstalled 'bloatware' - two games and Facebook, Netflix and one or two others.
4. No issues installing my personal apps. Enabled developer mode (had to create a Mi account to enable some settings, but eh), plugged into laptop, fired up Android Studio, and apps work. Had to change minor config to enable my Android 8 app to run on 9.

Cons:
1. Not a con really but when the phone boots up, the MIUI 'splash' screen is terrible - a weird repeating, distorted blurry animation that had me thinking the screen was acting up the first time I saw it.
2. Battery drains faster than I expected. Went from 60% out of the box to about 29% 3 hours later - was syncing/installing the whole time. But was expecting more. Will test it tomorrow.

Will post again after I've had it a week or so. So far, for R3,200, it's a delight.

Nice review, look forward to hearing more after you've played more

I also got my Note 8 Pro from Amazon yesterday. Agreed on every point except battery. The phone was 60% charged yesterday afternoon when I opened up the packaging. I set up the phone, updated MIUI, installed a bunch of apps, watched 20 minutes of Youtube, streamed some music, tried a few games to gauge speed, messed with the camera, used the GPS for half an hour this morning, browsed Reddit and made two phone calls. It's currently sitting on 27% battery, sixteen hours later.

Settings I manually changed that could have an effect on battery life:
  • Switched the phone to dark mode
  • Switched on auto-brightness
  • Opted out of submitting usage data and opted out of receiving tailored ads
At this point in time, battery life is definitely a Pro for me but my opinion may change with more regular usage.

Hi there
Was it R3200 with customs?
Please can you share the link, seems like none of the online stores have any good deals on the 6/128 gig version
