The Official Xiaomi Thread

Has app drawer.
Speed up animations.
Customizability.
Poco
Has better app drawer IMO (show apps via colour or category)
Less customisable but I prefer it's look as standard over a custom Nova.

Speed animations I'll admit is a good feature.

Also dunno if it's just me or a setting I overlooked, but I can't pull the app drawer or notification shade from the middle of the home screen.

Abit of a different issue - has anyone around here experienced micro sd issues after updating to Android 10 or even on android 9. I have an issue where I will send files across from pc to phone wirelessly but then even though the files seem to have sent successfully I don't see them on phone via file manager.

Connecting phone wirelessly back to pc shows (on pc) that the files copied over. And i try copy them again then they are duplicated but on the phone they don't show up. This was not an issue when I was on Android 9.

PS - I prefer to copy files wirelessly over connecting with cable as its quicker & much faster to send a file over via WIFI as opposed to android file transfer.

One more Q - worth the extra 1.8k for the note 8 pro?

I have the Note 8 Pro. Hope this helps! The Note 8 Pro has a MediaTek chipset as opposed to the Snapdragon chipset. It's really great for gaming on mobile if you're into that sort of thing. I've experienced this in person but a lot of other owners on Reddit have commented on the same thing as well as a few of the reviewers.

The MediaTek chipset does present challenges when it comes to custom ROMs and APK's though. Your options there will be more limited with fewer custom ROMs available for the phone. There is an active GCam community for the Note 8 Pro but they do still tend to lag behind the GCam releases for Snapdragon based phones. MediaTek have recently opened up their SDK to the Android developer community which makes custom ROM development much easier but since Snapdragon chipsets are far more widespread, most custom ROM developers will still favour development on those.

If one of the newer phones (like the Note 9) is similarly priced to the Note 8 Pro I'd still suggest you opt for that instead. Any Snapdragon-based phone is going to enjoy improved support across the board due to their popularity. I opted for the Note 8 Pro because it was on an amazing special on Amazon last year and I'm not too focused on custom ROMs anymore and I also enjoy playing the odd game on my phone. It suits my needs well but that won't be the case for everyone.

How much did you pay at amazon?

Hmmm... sounds like the regular note 8 is probably best then? I don't game on mobile at all. Was mostly lured in by the better processor speed, RAM and storage. I guess it might be overkill for videos + web browsing and social media.

Also, I don't see the Note 9s anywhere locally. Not keen on importing for warranty and shipping reasons. Unless its about to hit Takealot, in which case I'll just wait for that.

Just take note, I don't think the regular note has NFC if that is something you'd be interested in.

I don't have the exact amount at hand right now but it was under R2500 all in. It was delivered to my brother in the states (who has Prime) and he brought it over during a visit to SA in December. I created a whole spreadsheet with possible options and prices and it just ended up being the best bang for buck for my particular needs.

Stock in transit for Note 9s apparently. Will probably hit suppliers soon then... I have emailed them, waiting for ETA.

I see Xiaomi SA on FB advertising that some of the phones including Mi 10 are available on contract through Vodacom. Anyone have a link to that?
