Okay these screens are really soft, got a fine scratch on my have had barely three days and I've only been putting it in my pocket. Wish the freaking screen protectors they had on Takealot were the ones for ours. Going to also ask Zastraa which screen do they have for R159, is it for the International version or the chinese.

If you are fine with plastic protectors you can also buy those big protectors and then cut to size. This is probably not the best solution but will do the job. Maybe the other option is to arrange with someone who is gonna order something next to grab a couple of screen protectors for you.

3 unfortunately :( my wife is using a plastic one to keep hers together and it doesn't feel as nice.
The screen feels nice and smooth, this phone does have a premium feel for a mid range phone.

My previous Moto G screen was also soft despite claiming to have Gorilla Glass 3. My Redmi Note 2 has lived a total of 5 minutes without a tempered glass screen protector on, so I cannot comment on the hardness of the displays.

I went to the Post Office now and made so much of a nuisance of myself that the teller handed me both their waybill files and told me to look for my own stuff. I couldn't find it despite the online portal saying "First Notification to recipient", so I left my name and number with her and said I would be back tomorrow at lunch time to continue the fight

So the Redmi Note 2 is really easy to take apart. I figured I don't have any warranty left on the device so I may as well open her up and see if I can spot the issue with the speaker why it refuses to work.

12 screws to get the rear frame off and another two more with a bunch of connectors to get the mainboard out. The speaker has two brass spring connectors that link it to the mainboard and they are taut and make good contact with the board. I slightly widened them in the hope that perhaps one was having an intermittent connection but alas, after reassembly the earpiece still does not work. I am currently scouting eBay for speakers to see if I can get it fixed or make it work again, at least as a backup phone once I get my Note 4

EDIT: After a second reassembly after I heard a femtosecond of speech come through the earpiece while testing I discovered the problem - there is a minute wire going from the speaker assembly to the voice coil and the one pole had disconnected itself from the solder pad. I had to use a magnifying glass to see the strand, so thin it was so there is no way I will be getting it back to where it is supposed to be. I found an eBay seller willing to sell me two pieces for $6, so I will order one and hope for the best

Well done, pity we don't have easily accessible spares for these phones, every cellphone shop has no clue what you've got when you take it in. So my mil took her Note 2 in to have the screen repaired, we got her one from Zastra and the guy tells her that the broken screen must've caused a short as now it won't charge, it's like no it was usuable before? Perhaps it needs a longer charge?

Agreed.

Sometimes I wish all phones had interchangeable modular parts, like Lego or something :D

I have heard that the charging ports on the Redmi Note 2 are finicky at the best of times (mine is with certain chargers, sometimes it doesn't make proper contact) but from what I saw last night it is a small logic board that houses the charging port and should be an easy thing to swap out. The first result on eBay is one for ~R74 including international shipping, so I don't know if it may be worth your while to have it replaced?

The Post Orifice just phoned me to tell me my package is ready for collection. Customs and processing was R65.89 for a total cost of just under R2400 for the Redmi Note 4

My packages also end up at Newton Park and I've had my share of frustrations too. I usually get the collection notice from them about a week after I've actually picked up the device. But I do have to give credit where it's due: extremely few items have "disappeared" when using them for bringing things in from overseas. Not saying it won't ever happen, but it has given me a bit more perspective on their services.

Notice the battery sticker (lol, compiance). 4 cells/ 2 batteries or less. I wonder if the item that gets rejected by DHL is because it falls outside the '4 cells/ 2 batteries or less'. The package also included a Material Safety Data Sheet for a Lithium ion battery.

Ockie has a different view on that matter :D

I suspect the price drops is because of 64 gig versions poping up.

Observations on the Note 4 Global vs my old Note 2:

Note 4, being a metal body design with no removable rear cover, feels more solid in the hand. The sleek aluminium is also a nice touch. The plastic strips for the antennas aren't as noticable as the reviews would suggest. It also looks awesome in black.

Fingerprint unlock is fast and accurate, and I love the integration with the FNB app

The battery is the deal maker or breaker for me, but so far I am unable to comment as I haven't given it a full charge yet. But battery drain on idle seems much better than the Note 2.

Performance wise it is snappy and more or less on par with the Note 2, maybe a bit faster in multitasking. I haven't loaded any games yet, but even installing apps from the app store seems pretty nippy.

I have mixed feelings regarding the 2.5D screen. I will be installing the tempered glass screen protector tonight but I am worried it doesn't cover the edges as nice as with the Note 2
