The Official Xiaomi Thread

Just received my dad's Note 4 that I'll be setting up for him. Ordered the 10th on Gearbest, shipped via Aramex and received at 8:00 sharp today (18th)

Noice! Old folks need a bigger screen as well. Pity they don't make a slab that's 1/2 screen, 1/2 physical keyboard...

He is coming from a Lumia 1320 with a 6" display, but I feel the half inch won't make too much of a difference. He is getting pretty tech savvy despite his previous phone being a 3310! I think he will appreciate the crisper display, improved camera and fingerprint sensor. I'll be giving it to him on Sunday so will have to gauge the response :D

So that's a saving then, as you would have to buy 500mb data if you only bought the device. Yes?

correct, but if i bought the device from takelot yesterday on that special, the savings would pay for the 500mb data for the 12 months through afrihost. and i'm sure i'd have the phone by monday.

starting to realize i should've gone this route. i know its been posted quite a few times but can you list all costs involved? i.e the phone, shipping and customs/duties etc.

Sure thing.

R2111.20 per device (Redmi Note 4 32GB ROM 3GB RAM SD625) = R4222.40
R15.00 approx for Priority Line shipping (7 - 15 working days), free shipping takes up to two months but customs would be a bit cheaper
R313.00 customs and clearance

R4550.40 or R2275.20 per device. It took eight days to get from being shipped by Gearbest to me having it in my grubby little paws :)

After the package gets to SA, Aramex will phone you for your e-mail address (for me, this was day six). They then send you a mail with the total amount due (day seven). After you pay this they release it and it leaves for the local depot closest to you. The next day (day 8) they delivered to me.

10/10 would use again :D

I did not. I do have an account with them however.

Gearbest offers Priority Line shipping via Aramex. I'm not sure about the other vendors (Geekbuying, dx.com, etc) but I'd highly recommend Gearbest as their priority shipping is very cheap. I sent it to my home address but asked Aramex in my mail to them to rather ship to my work as they delivered early the morning

My Note 4 was a Global version from HK Warehouse. Stock from ES and other warehouses tend to be pricier. I stand to be corrected but the difference between Global and China is the factory ROM.

Do note that if you purchase an item on flash sale it usually only ships after the sale has ended...normally a few days later only.

I used PayPal as it's a bit easier in case of hassles. Fortunately I haven't had any troubles yet.

Personally I'd rather go for the 4X with the Snapdragon 625 CPU. It has better battery life and the lack of performance in comparison with the MTK model isn't noticeable in day to day usage.

I feel MIUI isn't as bloated as it appears and it does well to hide it's bulk with fluid animations and effects. Load times aren't too bad either on the two devices I've used.

I've equipped my dad's phone with Google Now launcher though. I think MIUI might be a bit too different for him to get used to

Thanks for the answers.

Sigh, to stick with Note 3 and wait for Note 5 or... pull the trigger on a flash sale Note 4 SD and attempt to sell the Note 3.....

I'd wait it out and see what the Note 5 brings.

If all else fails, buy a Note 4 for a bargain once the 5 releases :D

I see the Note 5 is rumoured to be coming with the SD 660, which has scored benchmark's not far below the SD 835 in the Samsung S8+. They sure would make the Note 5 an attractive buy...

I just hope the battery life is equal or greater than the Note 4. I value battery life more than outright speed IMHO. No use in buying a Ferrari if you only have a Coke bottle full of fuel ;)

Yeah, that is what would make me avoid the Note 4 Helio - the battery life on that is comparable to what I used to get on my S5 and that is not good enough for my needs...

Note 5 would need to at least match my Note 3 - after 8 non stop hours of work related whatsapp web, SM, emails and browsing, I am still sitting on 41% right now. LOVE the battery life on these phones...

Ever since I got my wife the Mi Max, I'm battling to come up with a good excuse to sell my Note 3 and get myself one (maybe even the Mi Max 2). Jir, I just can't find anything wrong with the Note 3.

Same here, although I tend to disable all animations in developer options.

FYI my brother have an S4, said battery life improved dramatically after installing Lineageos.

Which goes to show. Stock Samsung android suxx0rz, better replace it with something else :D

So far I'm happy with MIUI, but wish Huawei could at least send an update or two to their MediaPads...
