The Official Xiaomi Thread

How many of you received devices with fake roms ?

If you refer to Custom roms, 1 out of the 3 phones I bought from Gearbest. I had one on my Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 MTK. MI 5 and Note 4 (SD) where proper

How do you find this out?

Check the Rom version number. See http://en.miui.com/thread-392159-1-1.html

Fake or not I normally download the full recovery ROM from MIUI regardless and flash it before use. That way I get rid of unwanted apps as well.

Do you perform an update through the updater app or do a fastboot flash ? I've done it through the updater app. But have seen online people saying that it can still leave behind malware if there was any in the fake rom

Which one. Since you need an unlocked bootloader to use any fastboot rom

Simplest method I use is to boot phone into fastboot and use fastboot to flash official (Dev or stable) The Xiaomi Flashtool can do this for you if you do not know the commands.

All methods and media can be found at http://en.miui.com/a-234.html

Recovery and Normal Update is also there.

Edit: If you have a custom rom on the phone chances are that its already unlocked. If not you can simply follow the guide to unlock it. Can take some time for some but they not as full of crap as OEM's when it comes to unlocking your device.

Yeah fastboot requires unlocked bootloader. Fake roms get loaded and then they relock the loader.

My bootloader is locked. And I just used the updater app to flash to developer without an issue when I received the phone. But would like to do a fastboot flash
