The OpenWeb VPN Progress Report Thread

I am so frustrated with openweb at the moment. I have a 30gb vpn adsl account. Since the 11/01 it has become incredibly slow - i'm talking dial-up slow.

My hardware is fine because, because when I use my Webafrica account, the speed is blistering again.

I'm also fed up ... I'm on their uncapped express account and have been rate-limited since Monday morning. Attempts to resolve it via email are going nowhere fast. I can't understand why my IS stats page says I am rate-limited when I have clearly not used anywhere near 10GB in the last 10 days.

Is this a common problem? I'm suspecting someone ran out of bandwidth (as it is near the end of the month), and so implemented rate limits. Question is, who?

cheers, Ian

Issue was sorted out the next day (Wednesday), after struggling since Monday morning. Reason for rate-limit still unknown, Keoma applied some account management sleight of hand to restore full access.

Not very good

I was on the 10gb 384k VPN and decided to cancel.
Speeds were ridiculously slow, and ping times took much longer than average.

Web browsing became incredibly slow.
Skype 4 took over an hour to download.
VOIP was very choppy
and even local web sites took longer than usual to load.

Using my SHAPED saix account, all the above problems disappear.

It's such a pity because it really looked like a great solution for R299 per month for UNSHAPED access...

Since 8:20 this morning.

Apparantly an IS backbone went down, the VPN itself was fine. Seems to be fixed now.

I had to get that from MrBeep.

I also told the call centre guy so he would be better informed because no one bothered to email him xD

Will this work on Mac OSX? I know that you need WIndows for Openweb to work - what about this offering?

Hi,
Openweb changed our VPN Account name without notifying us, so We've been without until 2 days ago. The new account works fine on our home PC, but I connect with my Macbook & have been able to connect with the new Account name, but it can't connect to any sites :(
it worked previously so not sure what the problem is?

Any advice?

My VPN is working great! Saw an improvement at the beginning of this month and now its flying.

Anyone having problems with the VPN? I can connect, but can't connect to a website or anything else. It doesn't even start, not even 1 bit. Is it just me?

The VPN has been terribly slow the last few weeks, like less than 1KBps at times untill the total failure starting yesterday.

Hi, I recently joined openweb and have created a PPPOE for the local and the PPTP for the VPN connection. I dial the 'local" one first, but it works for international and it goes at proper 384 speeds( or close enough ) and that is what im paying for. But as soon as I connect to the "international" VPN connection the speeds is ridiculous...so I guess I should stay on "local"?

It will probably only work on international for the first gig. If you don't disconnect, you may be able to squeeze out a bit more.

U should have consulted the forum before runnin with them mate...... Btw is there a place that you can launch a complaint against an ISP i.e. the subject matter of this thread, i've had a s*#ty experience with them and just aren't willing to let it slide.

Dude, yeah, the VPN has been TERRIBLY slow for the last month or so. Complaining about it has only gotten me a "We will ask telkom to reset your port" response, even though the standard IS international is fine. Asking how this could possibly do anything, they say "resetting the port might increase speeds" with no further explanation. Well, after the port reset everything is predictably exactly the same. My advice is to keep to the IS local, but not to disconnect. Check in here periodically for an explanation or progress report from Keoma/MrBeep.

Seriously MrBeep, would you please investigate a bit futher? R300 is cheap for what you are supposed to get, but when you get nothing for it, it is bloody expensive. I would like to stay a customer of yours.

No change at all. No reply from an e-mail. This is totally unacceptable! Keoma, please respond truthfully and without any weasel words. Frankly, I am wondering why I should even bother. Clearly there must be some kind of problem, so please just tell us what it is.
