This thread is intended for general news (good or bad) about the OpenWeb VPN accounts (well, their others as well I guess).

Well, here is the first one. I have not been able to connect to my OpenWeb 384kbps 10Gig VPN account all day and have been restricted to the telkom local only account they provided me. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or what. I had a short power failure and have not been able to connect since. As the local only account is working, I don't think the modem could be to blame. I have completely reset the modem and re-entered the username and password. I have tried every avenue I can think of to connect to the VPN, but no dice. Are there any noob mistakes I could be making? Is the OpenWeb server down by any chance (that would explain a lot). I have had this account for one and a half days and am not very satisfied at the moment. If the server is down, how often does that happen?

Thaks a lot for any input!!

Edit: Seems sorted now! Did anyone else experience any problems?

P.S. I am glad I found this site! Glad to be here.

Please do the following:

Attention; all who are using OpenWeb's VPN Account, please read up:

Do not use your Router to connect directly to your Local OPenWeb Account. Do the following:

(I) Create a PPPoE Internet Connection - For the Local Account.
(II) Create a VPN Internet Connection - For OpenWeb's VPN.

Dial th PPoE first, and then the VPN Account. I know that this might seem silly, but do verify your Username & Password with OpenWeb, regarding the VPN connection. I struggled for three days, and then I discovered that I was using the wrong Username & Password.

Now everything is up and running again.:)

(I) Creating the PPPoE - (Point-to-Point over Ethernet) Internet Connection:

1) Start -> Network Connections -> Double Click on the Network Connection Icon

2) Click on the [Create new Connection] -> Click [Next] -> Tick on the (o) Connect to the internet option -> Click [Next] Tick the (o) Setup my Connection manually -> Click [Next] -> Tick on the (o) Connect using a broadband Connnection that requires a username and password. -> Click [Next].

3) Type in anything you like here. Just make sure that you will be able to indentify this Connection, as the PPPoE one. eg. OpenWeb - PPPoE. -> Click [Next].

4) Type in your Local Account's Username & Password. Click [Next].

5) Tick on the Option that says: [,/] Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop.

[FINISHED SETTING UP THE PPPoE CONNECTION]

I mention some tips HERE And believe me, they are needed with a VPN Internet Connection!

I hope that this has shed some light on your problem.

Cheers.

Thanks for your tips Thomas07! I can't seem to connect the local only account that way though? Do I have to reset my router first so it doesn't have the username/password in it anymore? My network folder looks like yours now and the local only username/password is correct (I am using them in the router setting again so I can post this). I don't have a Telkom router, but a Planet ADE-4100. Could that be the problem and if so, do you know of setting I need to change in the router? Thanks a lot for your time!

Well I have had a lot of grief since Tuesday with extremely slow speeds - talking about 1kb/s to 5 kb/s average download and browsing speed. Terrible latency as well.

According to MrBeep there is a problem with Verizon but they are hoping to have it fixed by this weekend. Downloading a 6 meg file is estimated to take 12-18 hours. Local usage is perfect (without VPN connected).

Ah, that explains a lot. I can't connect the VPN at all though, and still not the PPPoE connection outside of the router. Does OpenWeb experience problems often? The VPN accounts are 3 month contracts, so should I consider something else after that period?

I still can't connect! MrBeep e-mailed me, saying that the peer link between Verizon and IS should be fixed by now, but no dice. Dammit!

I signed up around 12th August and apart from setting up issues (my router did not support multiple VPN connections and Openweb was very helpful in this regard) this is the second problem I have had with the VPN.

The problem is not with Openweb though. I will admit SAIX has the better service, IS has been a bit iffy.

Just tried logging in to EU WoW - latency is 500-800ms and is somewhat playable yet it is a bit laggy and I even had a disconnect. Going to try the WoW Beta (hosted in the US) now for a comparison.

Kalster, try the following...

Hello again!

Yes, you are right. I do not Log-in to the Router to connect the Local Account from there. So yes, try resetting your Router. Once you have done that, try to connect. First with the PPPoE (Local) and then the VPN Account.

The other thing that you guys can do, regarding the VPN Internet Connection being very slow, is to send an e-mail to OpenWeb's Support address. And informing them about the slow internet connection.

I did just that. Keoma got back to me (lovely person:p), saying the following:

"Hi Thomas
I appreciate your email. Apparently there was a problem with the Verizon IS peering link. I have also asked Telkom to reset your port. Please switch off your router for 10 minutes then back on."

I did just that, and now my connection speed is what it is suppose to be.

Make sure that you have disabled Windows Xp's Firewall... And again, verify your Username and Password for the VPN.

Good luck man!:)

Aggh no man!!!

Just to let you guys know, those of you who is also using OpenWeb's VPN Internet Connection. --->

The internet speed is back to being very slow...! I hope that this is only temporarily. For I am currently downloading stuff (International) at 500 - 5000b/s.

Not a happy chappy indeed.

What are you guys experiencing with OpenWeb's VPN Connection so far...?

Cheers.

It's been like this for almost a week now.

Quite pissed off.

My speed has been ok since late yesterday, although I only signed up for the 384kbps VPN account. I get about 320 kbps (out of 384) download and 90 - 100 kbps (out of 128) upload with a 128 ms ping at the Jo’ burg Verizon server. I also got the e-mail from Keoma (the exact one), except for port reset part. The only problem I have at the moment is that the speed is not very stable and every so often it stops completely, after which a disconnect/reconnect fixes it. I still have the local details in the router though, so I'll give you way another go. I hope the problems get sorted out soon, and that they get enough customers so they can afford after hours telephonic technical support. These guys have three months to impress me (the duration of the mandatory contract), after which I'll re-evaluate the setup. I really hope they get things sorted out though, as this still is a very cost effective solution.

(just had to disconnect/reconnect to send this post :( )

So yes, try resetting your Router. Once you have done that, try to connect.
This did not work I'm afraid. I don't know if I have to change some setting in the router for it to allow me dialing from windows? It is on PPPoE LLC. That ok? Thanks for the help!

My VPN still same. Stops working after a time and then requires disconnect/reconnect. Can't download torrents because of that.:(

Apparently it is fixed now Keoma has told me.

I will see in an hour or so, he has just suspended my account for that period to get the ports reset and all that jazz.

You probably need to put your router in Bridged mode, but I have no knowledge of how to do that with your specific router. In other words, your router will then act like a modem, and you will only be able to connect via a dial-up connection from Windoze. On my routers the option for it is under the WAN set-up page, so have a look there, better yet, read the manual ;)

Success! Thanks for all your help guys! Now let's just see if the line stability has improved...

Edit: Nah, still stops working after a while, whereafter a disconnect/reconnect fixes it. Sigh..

so its not just me then.... had all the same problems- terrible line speeds (1-2k), problems just connecting to the VPN(errors 619 and 629 were common), the VPN dropping constantly, http seems to be prioritised over torrents (supposed to be unshaped) and very little in the way of actual help and support (wait all day for an email reply, and then it has little real help)

I get the impression that this VPN product isn't ready for the market, but good advertising hype and a 3 month contract has us stuck. there has been nothing in the way of apology or admission of poor service (some BS about verizon and IS link)

I am looking for alternatives for when my contract expires, or possibly cut my loss and just change now.
