The OpenWeb VPN Progress Report Thread

Hey Friends

Our VPN product is indeed ready for the market.

We have up to 70% available bandwidth on the network.

The problem here seems to be the link between IS and Verizon, which was fixed last week. For some reason, the problem is now back to haunt us.

I have logged a call with IS to have this sorted.

I apologise for the trouble caused!!

Kind regards
MrBEEP

Its not the VPN - its the stupid IS Local-only ADSL Bandwidth pool...

I'm using webonline Local-only and speeds are fine...45kB/s Download speeds over the VPN...

Ok. I got a test account from Sainet which runs on SAIX AFAIK. I then did a few speed and ping tests using the various combinations and these are the results (I think the Sainet test account is international, so the result could mean little):

Sainet SAIX + OpenWeb VPN: 313 down, 96 up and 256 ms ping.

Sainet SAIX only: 327 down, 102 up and 226 ms ping.

IS Local Only + OpenWeb VPN:306 down, 84 up and 262 ms ping.

IS Local Only, only: 322 down, 96 up and 208 ping.

These were all done within 10 minutes of each other and the tests were done from Welkom to Jo’ burg.

Not sure if this means anything. The Sainet account is shaped, while the IS one is not. So the speeds seem relatively similar (in this test), while Sainet account on its own does not die eventually like anything that has IS somewhere in the mix.

Woah!

Can anyone tell me what Bit Swapping is and why my line does not die now that I have enabled it in my router! It has been about an hour, and still no problems! :D

Edit: I spoke too soon. AAARGH!!!

Hi guys
I'm another victim of the Openweb VPN accounts,I signed up last month.Always with very slow download speeds(torrents about 5-6 kb/s),drops constantly, you can't connect behind Windows firewall, lately to browse the Internet is almost impossible.I remember was working better(but no 100%)like 3 weeks ago. They blame Telkom for my problems, according to them my line was tested by a Telkom engineer and gets disconcted from the exchange about 20 times a day!!!???.Even with the local account to browse the net is a nigthmare.Things were so bad that yesteday I decided to change my router settings to my previous ISP,and everything was cool again.I think Openweb did not figure out yet how to make this vpn accounts to work properly and we are part of an experiment.

Guess my friend was right about this VPN since he works with everyday...He said about everything will be fine until too many people get on since everyone is basically sharing the same line.

Hey Friends

The VPN account does not drop connections. It will not disconnect you at any time. If your ADSL line loses sync to the exchange, the VPN will drop, and you will have to reconnect it in order to restore your service. This is the nature of a VPN account.

If your 'VPN' connection drops, kindly contact Telkom on 0800 375 375 and have your line tested.

Speed wise the VPN is performing beautifully. I have asked the guys to increase speeds over and above what was paid for and many of our VPN clients are smiling from ear to ear with the free speed increase.

An expirement: Not quite. Experiments are done in a lab. I am not going to put my company name on an account that is still being experimented on.

I am extremely excited about the VPN accounts, and the massive savings our clients are currently realising, and am proud to say our VPN accounts are not, and will never be oversold.

If you are having difficulties, kindly contact me on [email protected]

To be fair, jasp, torrent speeds are governed by the amount of seeders vs leachers etc. If you want faster speeds, sign up for a usenext account.

As for my problems: I had no luck with telkom. So I thought that maybe my firmware got screwed up somehow. So I download the newest firmware from my router's manufacturers. I followed their instructions to the letter and promptly bricked it! Tried all kinds of de-bricking tricks, but no dice. So I ordered a new router from Sybaritic, which should arrive on Friday. Does anyone have any experience with SMC? A friend of mine has one and doesn't have any problems. In fact, I took my VPN account details and connected with his SMC modem at his house, and no problems! It worked the whole day at fast speed. So either it was my modem (hope so) or a problem with Telkom or the line (please, no!). I'll report any new developments.

Ok. I borrowed a friends modem and had no problems for about two days. I downloaded a lot of stuff with no problems. At first, the IS link disconnected quite frequently, but in internet explorer (Tools ->Internet Options->Connection) I first chose "never dial a connection", then for both the IS and VPN, in the same screen, I went
properties->advanced. There I de-selected "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed" and have not had one disconnect since. I am happy! Getting my new modem on Monday in the post.

Hi guys
I noticed something "mysterious" with my VPN account, always drops at 12:00 midnight, this is the 3rd time that I aware of it,yesterday was working better than ever I got download speeds of 30 kb/s in u-torrent and suddenly drops at 12:00 am,then I reconnected but the speeds were down again, and I found it still connected this morning.Anybody has experinced the same?.

Any updates on this VPN disconnecting problem? Mine runs for 5 mins then disconnects. If I reconnect it refuses to allow access internationally and I have to reboot my modem before it will work again.

I have phoned Telkom to have my line tested and they say there are no problems. If I use a secure tunnel to browse internationally over the Local Only account that comes with the OpenVPN account the connection stay open with no problems - if the lining was going out of sync I would have to reopen my secure tunnel, so I don't think there is problem with my line or IS.

I have tried using the VPN on both my Mac and Windows and I have the same problem, so I doubt its an OS setting thats incorrect. Openweb gives me useless information when I ask for help.

I really am annoyed and want my money back!

I also had multiple problems with the VPN account. That is until I tried it with a friends modem. Untick the "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed" for both the IS Local and the VPN connections as described above. That took care of the last bit of disconnecting for me. Getting my new modem today, so fingers crossed!

I have 2 adsl lines and two routers. On the one router the pptp connects but doesnt work and on the other one it connects and works perfectly.

These VPN accounts are pretty picky about the router's but buying the correct router is a small price to pay for such a bargain.

Agreed! I think it would be a good idea to post the names of routers having problems and those that don't. Then we can compare them and figure out if the problem might be with the router or somewhere else. Good Idea?

The router that has been giving me problems was a Planet ADE-4100A. The router that worked perfectly is a SMC, I'll post the specific model a bit later today.

Ok. My adsl modem is a D-Link DSL-2500U and I also have a wireless router connected, SMC SMCWBR14T-g. I don't have the model number of the SMC modem I tested with, but if one of them works, then presumably the rest should too.

Hi guys,

I have just got 10gig openweb vpn account and am pretty diss. Im surprised that no one has spoken about the overhead the vpn connection puts on the line, I setup a pppoe connection for the 10gig local, connect that then the vpn right away, download for 10 min with utorrent, openweb 10gig account, 16.5 meg, vpn account 6.5meg.

Is this just me or will we end up paying for only R299 for only 6gig of data anyway?
