Each case is different, and it is right that the courts consider also the particularities of the case, the accused, etc.

We should be grateful the justice system still has regard for the unique circumstances in each case, rather than some universally applied algorithm that requires no prudence, judgment, and judicial discretion.

This is only the bail decision, folks. Unless there is a real risk of fleeing from justice, everyone has the right to their liberty until convicted in an open court. It's a basic postulate.

Indeed.

Pistorius is well-known internationally. There is no way he could have a life abroad and continue his career were he to flee justice in SA. I think the judge rightly assessed that the probability of flight in this particular case was lower than the harm done to justice by his continued incarceration.

There could be jeering or protests every time that Pistorius tries to compete overseas so I doubt that he will be making too many appearances until he has been tried. The public will not easily forgive and forget this tragedy no matter the circumstances.

Huh? You're getting a bit ahead of the process here.
He does not deny killing her.
He claims it was accidental.
The State avers otherwise.
They will argue this in an open court, and a judge will decide.
Until then, he is presumed innocent. The term presumed has a very specific legal meaning in this context - it does not require that we or anyone think or assume that he's innocent (presume is not the same as assume) ... it essentially means that until he is proven to be guilty and found thus by an impartial tribunal, his (and your) normal rights cannot be vitiated, unless there is a real chance that the accused will flee from the justice that is to come.

Patience. Haste can do even greater injustice.
