The PC Build Thread

First lot coming in soon (ordered and should be here on Saturday):

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 Quad Core 1500X (It's a decent CPU for what I intend to use it for, mainly light gaming and general day-to-day use)
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3 (was this or the ASUS Prime. Went for this eventually after much back and forth as it has better audio, and most importantly with all the BIOS updates: Dual BIOS! Read lots of horror stories where people have bricked their Primes)
HDD: Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 7200RPM (For mass storage only)
CASE: Corsair Carbide 400Q V2 (The Mrs forbid another light show, so I went for closed and quiet this time)
PSU: Corsair RM Series RM550X (reliable, clean, modular power)
NETWORK: Asus PCE-AC68 Wireless (PC will be about 4 metres from the router, and not arsed to run cabling between the two front rooms right now)
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 G1 Gaming 6144MB (out of ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte the G1 was the cheapest by a length locally, and actually not half bad spec-wise. The EVGA SC looked nice for the same price, too, but the G1 is quicker out the box, and has a backplate)
Headset: HyperX Cloud (just wanted something super comfy that will do the job)

To be ordered from other suppliers (main supplier either didn't stock it, or was too expensive):

SSD: The Samsung EVO 850 250GB was about £30 more than what I'm able to get it for elsewhere, so decided to shop around.
RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z 3000Mhz (supplier doesn't stock the brand, and I'd rather go with this model as the chips are made by Samsung and, well, G.SKILL)
Monitor: Dell U2417H (supplier has the S2417H only, and UltraSharp is eye-sex)
Fans: 2 x 140mm be quiet! Silent Wings 3 intake, 1 x 120mm be quiet! Silent Wings 3 exhaust

Why nVidia and not AMD? Well, it's much of a muchness at the moment. Researched for weeks, and it's back and forth between the RX480 and 1060 (and now RX580 and 1060), but I play Blizzard games mostly (WoW, Diablo, HotS, and soon Overwatch) and they're all nVidia optimised. The 1060 will run most other games at high or ultra in 1080p anyway (not going 1440p until I get at least a 1070/1080/Vega). Also, I get a free copy of For Honor!

Why AMD and not Intel? We could go on for days, but in the end it was basically down to the cost of a Z board and 6700/7700k - the 6600/7600k was out of the question, as price to performance was outdone by AMD across the board, and while the i7's are great chips, I'd rather not be fleeced by Intel like that, thanks.

Why 1500X and not the 1600/X? We've been down the "more cores will be better for gaming" road for what, over 10 years already? And it still hasn't changed much to be honest. 4c/8t will do me fine for a few years still, and when it doesn't and I can't OC the chip anymore, I'll drop in the next gen AM4 chip.

P.S: can't remember if I've left any parts out lol - it's been a long day

All good. Only comment is not fond of the Seagate HDDs in general and maybe go for a bigger SSD & settle for a smaller HDD or no HDD at all.
I've used WD, Seagate and Toshiba in the past, no real issues I can remember. Any reason why you wouldn't go Seagate?

Again, it's literally only for mass storage of movies, pictures, etc. Everything else will run off the SSD.

So, I've ditched the Dell, and bought an Acer Predator 24" 144hz G-Sync Panel. It's TN, and not IPS like the Dell, but hopefully the picture quality is decent and performance outweighs what I'll lose in eye-candy and viewing angles.

Nice. I got myself an Asus 144Hz FreeSync display a while back. It's also a TN and you definitely notice that's it's not as good as IPS but you get used to it pretty quick.

Got an email today saying they had no stock of the monitor (not surprising, as it was on special), so gone for the Dell instead. All finally arriving tomorrow! :D

Any kind MyBB member in Pretoria east, Elardus park area willing to acemble a PC for me for a 6 pack or 2? Alternatively any computer shops who will do it for slightly less than a arm and a leg?

Who you buying from?

It's really not that hard to do it yourself.

Lego for adults!

Finished mine yesterday. Longest part was... cable management... But all drivers installed and everything running beautifully.

This is my first system with an SSD: mother of God it boots quickly! Will time it today, but I swear I was on my desktop in under 6 seconds?!

Also looking to ditch my Dell, but I am looking for a decent 27" IPS 1440p.
I am starting to think that Curved is the best way to go for gaming monitors.
I know that when it comes it TVs, then curved is BS.
