Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Also, let me know if this is more suited to it's own thread or if I can leave this question here.
I'll try to keep it short, so let me know if I left out critical details:
Old system, (bought around 2008 iirc):
Core2 Duo 8400 LGA 775
4GB DDR2 666hz RAM
Geforce GT8600 Graphics Card
I boot from a USB and install Windows 10 64bit. Everything is happy. I try to play ZWIFT (cycling training program/game), but the graphics are very laggy. So i read up on the required benchmarks etc and it indicates that a new graphics card will give the best bang for buck.
So I buy a Gigabyte GT 1030. I got it yesterday afternoon. I download the Nvidia driver files from their website after doing a search before doing anything else. Shut down, pull out old Graphics Card, put in new one, Power On.
Firstly, system is VERY SLOW to start up, maybe 15mins....
Eventually get in and I set all graphics to lowest resolution and then try to install the driver software which is already downloaded. It takes an age to extract files and then during "Checking compatibility" phase it bombs out and says "Driver installation failed, there are other installations running"
Trust me, there are no other installations running. I tried restarting computer multiple times and every time I get the same failure.
So I go into Device manager to see if I can do the driver install there but the Graphics Card doesn't show there, only the onboard "Intel Chipset G33" or something display adapter.
The Graphics Card fan is on and I get an image through the DVI port on the new card to the screen, so there isn't a connection problem. System is just VERY slow because I assume the CPU is still doing all the work w.r.t. graphics because the new drivers are not running yet.
I am at the point where I think a total system reinstall from the USB boot drive is my only option, short of buying a new motherboard, Ram and CPU
Any suggestions how to fix it on my current system?
Is this graphics Card just incompatible with my old system, should I find a 2nd-hand i3 system somewhere for cheap and just build this card into that?
I am not wanting to do any serious gaming, just want to ride Zwift with fairly smooth graphics, would be most helpful if I can just get this current system running
