So if you already have an SSD it's not worth shelling out to replace it with an M.2 unless it's an increase in capacity. Unless, of course, you're trying to min/max every last bit of performance on your 3090-sli super computer.

NVME, M2 can be SATA as well
 
Thanks gents, that confirms my suspicions. I'll just get the cheapest MVMe drive (I want some more capacity anyway) and not worry about the beeeg numbers. My existing SSDs can then be passed down the food chain :p

I need some advice, I'm planning on the following for a new build
  • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
  • MOBO: ASrock B450 Steel Legend
  • RAM: Teamgroup 2x16 3200 CL16
  • GPU: XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III
  • COOLER: Phanteks PH-TC12DX
Then I came across the video by JayTwoCents where he is saying dont buy anything now, and to wait for AMD Keynote's this month

Any insight would be appreciated :)

Paul's Hardware also had a similar vid, but he made a valid point: new stuff comes out every 6 months, so no matter what you do your build is going to be redundant soon anyway.

That setup is still really good regardless, so pull the trigger if you NEED it right now. Or, just wait a bit longer and see what they announce at the end of this month.

How urgently do you need it? Can you wait a month?

One, you might get more performance for the same money with new AMD CPUs coming out.

Two, they usually drop the price of the older processors once the new ones come out.

So yes, they frequently release new stuff, but they do release new stuff at specific moments. Like, you are so close to the release of new graphics cards and CPUs that I'd just wait.

If you had to wait to pull the trigger on hardware, you'd never have anything. I mean I bought my 2600 in January of 2019 a few months before the 3600, it's been pretty cool so far.

Paul is being kinda dumb...the mid-cycle refreshes don't offer anything new. Hell, the next new generation doesn't move the needle enough to justify the spend to a value-conscious buyer. You can't say a Ryzen 3600 PC from July 2019 is outdated because AMD released a 3600XT a year later (that actually offered worse value) - that's just silly.

I sometimes think these reviewers who get free stuff all the time forget how money works :p

I used it and it told me my CPU was a bronze sample...ergo, the tool is garbage.

It did give me a marginally better Cinebench score but I lost a little single-threaded boost so I went back to my previous settings.

edit: glad it worked out for you - I saw on Reddit that people say the later you bought a Ryzen 2 CPU, the better your chances of getting good clocks at safe voltages. I got mine in August last year so didn't get the luck of the draw there. Guess it was time my luck ran out - my previous 2500K and 6600K were both decent.

Mine was silver :(

Can't remember if had improvement in performance, but much better temps. Due to my board pushing voltage to 1.45v on turbo most of the time!

Just make sure whatever you buy has cache ram, you don't want a cacheless one.
 
Prices might reduce slightly on the ryzen 5 3600 but with our exchange rates you never know. If you have time you could always wait for black Friday which has some good deals if you know what you are looking for

Alrighty thanks, I'll keep that in mind.
For now the cheap option is a Crucial P1, the nice to have a Samsung 970 Evo. Thinking I'd rather go cheap here so that I can get 32GB RAM instead of 16GB (for Cities Skylines with mods)

You missed the point: don't buy now if you want the latest, greatest up-to-date hardware on the market that's coming out in a few months. But if you do that, you're just going to be waiting forever because there is ALWAYS going to be something new, better and faster. Even if it's incremental.

Of course, that just means that previous gen is a LOT cheaper, too, because the PC market does this weird thing where the new best thing launches at pretty much the same price point as last year's new best thing did, so retailers have to put significant discounts on old stock just to move it.

So ultimately, it's best to just buy when you want to, but ideally, AFTER the new stuff comes out, because it means older stuff is much cheaper, but still relevant.

At least wait till tomorrow to know whether the Ryzen 5000 series will be worth waiting for.
Also, won't the RTX 3070 be faster for a similar price than the 5700XT?
 
Just a question - how do you measure the temp of your PC normally? My system keeps on giving me a "CPU fan error" on start up. I just press the F1, esc and then enter to carry on. Doesn't seem to have been an issue.

I may have mentioned this here before? :X3::oops:
 
From their presentation it looks great and they are clearly very confident. They priced it more expensive than the Intel equivalents. And only the 5600X comes with a cooler.

Ryzen Master (if you have a Ryzen CPU), intel extreme tuning utility (if you have intel), Core Temp, HWMonitor, or your motherboard software.
