Can't I just buy a 1080? The current one I am using seems fine for my needs. In that case you need to look at a rtx3060 or rx6600xt.

2 generations old not 3, also you'll be paying almost the same yeah. How much can you get one for? Remember, it’s how 3 generations old. No RTX, no DLSS and no warranty. So really comes down to price. I expect you’ll pay R8k for one. Might as well spend the extra for all the new features, warranty etc

3060Ti is next in line, but I'd say 3070. I'm running a 3070 and it handles 1440p like a dream. In my opinion, if you're buying new, you may as well get something 1440p capable as that's where things are headed. 1440p monitors are getting cheaper and the difference visually is worth the extra. Thanks all. Final question. What would be the next level up from the 3060? Thinking future proofing here.
3070ti is too hungry for power for what you're getting so the 6800xt would probably be a better bet.3060Ti is next in line, but I'd say 3070. I'm running a 3070 and it handles 1440p like a dream. So for my money, 3070 or the AMD equivalent (6800XT maybe?)

1060 3GB or 6GB?Okay, I have just checked. The PC has a 1060 GTX. I assume that's lower than a 1080 in performance.
Yeah that is a lot slower then a 1080.Okay, I have just checked. The PC has a 1060 GTX. I assume that's lower than a 1080 in performance.
6GB variant.1060 3GB or 6GB?
Either way, much slower than a 1080. Any card you can buy new is going to be an upgrade (except maybe 1650, not sure about that one because it's only fit for minesweeper).
3060 will be like going from your Corsa that you ramped over a traffic circle (lol, fun times) to a modern hot hatch.6GB variant.
So, a 3060 will be a decent upgrade then?
What CPU / MOBO setup would be good for this GPU?
Yep, performance is all a matter of mindset. I had a 3070, but then I upgraded to a 3070 with an LCD screen and the difference is indescribable. This guy had a 1080 or 1080 Ti till y'all made him check.

Depends when exactly you want to buy and what the budget is. You'd like to be looking at something like a Ryzen 5600x and B550 motherboard, but you could also go the Intel 12600K and Z590 motherboard (newer, faster, more expensive).

Do you need just the tower? Do you have any components already? Was the MK1 Golf. Still remember that night lol - fun times indeed.
So, its like going from my Corsa to the Seat Leon Cupra I have now (2.0 Turbo 200wkw) - gotcha...
I feel like I don't want to spend more than 20k on this PC. I assume that's too little?

Assetto Corsa Competizione Recommended Requirements
- CPU: Intel Core i5-8600K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
- CPU SPEED: Info
- RAM: 16 GB
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit
- VIDEO CARD: GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB, Radeon RX 580 8GB
- PIXEL SHADER: 5.1
- VERTEX SHADER: 5.1
- SOUND CARD: Integrated
- FREE DISK SPACE: 50 GB
- DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 8 GB
Just the tower. Only thing I have is an SSD (980GB) and some externals, like screen, KB and mouse.
The requirements I need for the game according to their site (Though this is older H/W - need something that will be a little bit future proof )

You're looking at something like this. Some of these parts may be found cheaper and there may be better options, but this is the type of build you're looking for.
