I got this one recently - seems very popular (good performance for the price).

Mushkin MKNSSDPE500GB-D8 Pilot-E 500GB

Wootware

One more thing - I see you are going with the i5-12400F - for the same price, you can get the non-F from Evetech. At least if your GPU gives issues, you can still use the onboard graphics.

Thanks Greg. I'll check it out and link it here to make sure the right one. Shot for the ssd recommendation.

With regards to the Evetech recommendation, just a word of warning.
https://mybroadband.co.za/news/busi...-of-breaking-the-consumer-protection-act.html

Buying from Evetech to save a couple hundred only to get screwed when you need after sales or warranty is really not worth it for such a small saving, especially when you can get it from Progenix for R3,778.

With regards to SSD my recommendation would be https://www.takealot.com/wd-blue-sn570-500gb-nvme-ssd/PLID73754857
The WD blue is slightly cheaper you get a 5 year warranty vs the 3 years on the Mushkin.

Yeah 5 year warranty is great. Thanks. I'll think about the mobo. But don't they all come with a standard on board graphics anyway? Unless things have changed. I interpreted Greg as saying the 12400F has no onboard graphics?

The other problem I have with these stick ssds is that I cannot take it out and use it in any pc like the old sata drives. My current pc can't even use these ssds.

You are correct all the mobo's have the ports for display but if the CPU doesn't have the onboard graphics then those ports won't work.
In your case the 12400F doesn't have integrated graphics so you will always need a GPU in the system, his suggestion was to get the 12400 non F as it has the integrated graphics so you can still use the system even without a GPU plugged in.

M.2 SSDs are definitely the norm now for newer systems and for older PC's that don't have an M.2 slot you can get a PCI-e to M.2 expansion card for relatively cheap now, or a an enclosure to just connect it to USB if you just need to access the files.

Yep, that M2 drive does look like a better deal... All the specs are basically the same. It has a slightly lower warranty on the TBW, but almost the same (300 vs 350).

I have heard bad comments about Evetech, but, I don't have any personal bad experiences. And I have also heard of bad experiences from Wootware, but they have been great for me too.

Thanks for your advice guys I will go with the Evetech one and just buy that enclosure for the ssd. I am partial to wester digital as have been using their drives for a couple of decades. Many thanks. I've used Evetech once before when I bought my GTX 1050ti and didn't have any problems.

I must say evetech deliveries are much quicker now, warranty returns I heard is still not great.

I'd rather eat a shoe than ever use Evetech again. Just google Evetech warranty or Evetech support issues, or check here and on Carbonite for the litany of issues.

Just double check that you get the correct enclosure for NVME drives, something like this https://www.takealot.com/orico-m-2-nvme-ssd-enclosure-black/PLID70724857

Careful off the cheaper NGFF ones that only support B-key drives, those won't work for the nvme drive you want to purchase.

EDIT: you could just also wait until you actually need the enclosure before you buy it, since this drive should be spending it's life inside your new PC on the mobo, you might never need that enclosure haha, unless you take out drives and connect them to other PC's often.

EDIT2 : Thinking about it, I was wondering why you would want to connect the SSD to your old PC anyway, since it's going into the new PC with what should be a fresh windows install and if you need to copy stuff from old PC connect those drives to the new PC, so the enclosure seems like it would be extra money spent for no gain?

I'm about to go ahead with this. I've decided to throw in a solid state drive to possibly around the 500gig region. I'm still on a mechanical drive!! Could you please suggest something. I see Mushkin is quite popular but I've never heard of them. Also they seem to plug into the motherboard? Is that some type of adapter that is needed? Thank-you in advance

As suggested get the WD Blue NVMe SSD.

It plugs directly into the m.2 slot on the MB. You want to install your OS and most frequently used apps/games on it.

nvme is faster than a sata drive, if you really need to transfer it to other machines use a external enclosure.

I would not touch evetech with someone else's 10ft pole but that's up to you.

Thanks Ponder. Alright I'm going with the WD. The cpu I am not sure about now, I don't want to be messed around with by Evetech. The cpu that you suggest on wootware, are you guys saying that without a gpu card, an actual graphics card, I won't be able to see anything on the screen? It's not a major issue I mean if that is what it is then fine! I always have a spare lying around. I'd just like to keep everything in one basket aka wootware.

Correct.

I specced the 12400F because it's cheaper by R580 compared to the 12400 which does have onboard gfx.

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600 just like the 12400F also doesn't have onboard gfx.

I'm very unknowledgeable about this stuff, see I would have just smashed in the first cpu that was suggested but sho there is that hidden stuff like that which I have no idea about. That cpu, although 500 more, I've added to the basket. Thanks Ponder. Just trying to keep it all on one site. You guys are awesome.

Are you going to have Wootware build it as well. Worth it if you are not experienced and there are any issues.

That is actually a good point. I didn't realize they can assemble them. Might be worth it throwing in a tower and having them put it all together for me. Can they deliver that?

Yes.

I deleted my comment because I saw some of the prices, like 22k etc, was looking in the wrong section entirely. I see now a build is about 470 odd plus all the components.

I'm going to do this. I don't want to even risk putting it together. I did my last pc and although it worked, the inside looked like the dogs breakfast. Also anything can go wrong with static etc.

Wootware is slow today. Sent a password reset email 30 mins ago, still nothing. Do they have any reps here on mybroadband?

Odd, I requested one for my account just now and it arrived within a minute.
Maybe try and go through the account creation and see if it gives you this message

otherwise shoot them a message on [email protected] , I don't think there is a forum rep for Wootware
