Was looking at the 6800 XT before and therefore got a 750W power supply already

Didn’t buy the card yet but now looking at the 6950XT, would a 750w psu work or should I just stick with the 6800XT

Going to do more 1440p and 4K gaming (1440p when 4K doesn’t run too well)

Got my Ryzen 7 5700X pc running now so ready for the GPU

Any suggestions ?

Yeah for that card you'd need 1000 from their recommendations

Really max I’ve seen it consume was 350-380w of power and the Ryzen only consumes 65w so 1000w seems crazy

Problem is I catered for the 6800XT and bought a 750w power supply

That's what they recommend, also the 5700x is a 125w chip, plus hdds, fans and stuff could push it to 650 so I mean you could use a 750

750W should be fine. The main issue with GPUs isn't their peak or sustained power draw, it's more the transient spikes. Not really an issue before the 3000 series of nVidia GPUs but something we're more aware of now. Still, 380W+65W for the CPU, add in some efficiency losses, fans etc and you're maybe maxing at 500W so you should have enough headroom for it to not be an issue.

As I have already demonstrated in detail in my basic article “Graphics Card’s Battle against Power Supply – Power Consumption and Peak Power Demystified”, higher loads in the millisecond range do exist for short periods of time, which can lead to inexplicable shutdowns if the power supply units are not properly designed or equipped. The TBP (Typical Board Power) measured by the graphics card manufacturer or the reviewers is not really helpful for a stable system design. Peaks with intervals between 1 and 10 ms can lead to shutdowns in very fast-response protection circuits (OPP, OCP), especially in multi-rail power supplies, although the average power consumption is still within the norm.

For the RX 6950 XT, I would therefore calculate 500 to 550 watts as a graphics card load proportionate to the system’s total secondary-side power consumption in order to have enough reserves for the worst case scenario.

Add in the 5700x which peaks upto 130w in certain scenarios, all the other stuff that needs power, 750w is cutting it a bit close for a 6950XT.

I do have 4 Corsair rgb fans as well and a rgb cpu cooler

Maybe should just stick to the 6800xt

Needed the extra frames for 4K though as primarily this pc is in the living room for gaming on the 4K Tv

Anyone running a 6950xt can speak on the power consumption ? Too bad Nvidia doesn’t have the power vs cost down as the power consumption of the 40 series is really good

Is AMD launching any 7000 gpus series soon

The latest rumours are the 7600, 7700 and 7800 GPUs are launching in June.

Crazy.! Once seen a mobo get fried due to incorrect standoffs.

Once had a PC that refused to boot. For the life of me I couldn’t figure it out. Decided to take it in to a PC repair shop. There was a tiny screw that had somehow got lodged between the motherboard and case that kept shorting the PC…

After 9 years the D5 pump in my rig gave up the ghost, so I'm using the excuse to also get a new case. Makes perfect sense right? Right!

I think I want to go back to the simplicity of air cooling only. Just easier to deal with air especially when swapping stuff. Although I didn't make my life any easier with my current case since I specifically wanted it small. And small pretty much means more difficult to work in. And I'm past the phase where I want that 'cool' factor of a custom loop with the performance it brings.

So what suggestions have you all? Ultimately I want a quiet solution. I do accept that air wont be as quiet as a custom water loop, but its still important. At the moment it seems like the Fractal Torrent is the way to go (simply dial the fans back) but what say you all?

I'm using the Deep Cool AK620 and it works really well and it's not particularly noisy. Will depend on your choice of CPU of course - what are you running?
As for cases, the Fractal Torrent is a great choice. The Phanteks P500A would be a good choice too.

I also went the air cooling route for simplicity and after doing some research it seems water cooling isn't really that more effective.

I settled on this one, which has been very quiet. Mine is the white version though as I tried to make my PC white

Noice, I have the dual-tower version of that one. Very lekker.
