The PC Build Thread

My Step-Son wants to build himself a system on this board - what CPU will have the best price vs performance ratio, that will fit this board. He does not like AMD.
Have you read the reviews on that item with him? The shipping is a risk and the OEM bios is an outright liability. It's also old tech and should be in the bargain bin.

He can get something more current for that money without those issues.

You have a better proposition in mind, and care to recommend a suitable board, in that price range, and a CPU that would fit, with a good price/performance ratio.

Remember he is not an AMD fan.

Thanks

Do you know why this is? I get that, but I feel like he's stuck with a very outdated opinion.

Modern AMD CPUs are fantastic. Certain use cases will favour Intel, but if it's for gaming, AMD is a very solid option.

Gigabyte make the same board for Intel's current CPU's...you could start there. I'd personally look at the DS3H since they're usually cheaper and I've used a couple before and found them solid but if he's set on that model, so be it, I guess.

Is the pc going to be for a specific usecase or more a general purpose machine?

No, no idea, he has just always used Intel, and never AMD. When he grew up AMD was difficult to get hold of, and Intel always had an edge.

Told him I got AMD, as CPU and motherboards, where cheaper and performance was as good or better.

He still favours Intel.

But if you can give me options, and I can get him to check benchmarks, which he used to like. He may decide otherwise.

Fortunately it is his money, not mine.

Will give that to him, for gaming, and general use. Fortunately it is not my money, he is spending. Will give him the options, you blokes feel are better, will discus with him. What he decides, is his problem.

I am very happy with the options you good folks came up with and the AMD box that resulted from that.

He's not wrong. Intel does have the edge over AMD with their CPU's and Mainboards/GPU's. I used AMD a lot, and switched to Intel and found it much smoother and more responsive.

I am running an AMD rig, and very happy with it. An equivalent Intel rig, would have cost a lot more, during COVID when I built it. And would probably have made me just as happy as the current rig. Niether AMD nor Intel are bad.

Also, just noticed, he does not like Micro - ATX sized boards - so yeah ... ;(

Other peoples preferances are a pain sometimes, when they are just based on preferance, and no logic involved.

No. Thanks.

Do we have a specific budget here? Will be easier to recommend if we know his total spending power for this.

Don’t know his total budget, will ask, already told him that the board he was considering was old and outdated.

Will hear what he says this afternoon.

Have a look at Evetchs upgrade kits. They are the cheapest but beware if something goes wrong...

Well, it seems over a few months he will have R12 000, to put into this project. Possibly a bit more.

His split is basically, R4000.00 - R4500 a month for each, a motherboard, CPU and RAM. The rest he already has. Including a RTX 2060 GPU.

Would like to stay as far away as possible from Evetech ... :)

But their upgrade bundles could give him something to consider, with regards of what goes together.

One thing to keep in mind is that his GPU is going to be the performance limiter here, not the CPU.

Seems he likes the Gigabyte Intel Motherboard from this build, says, he will give me the cash Friday, to get it for him.

I prefer it to the one he originaly linked.

Thanks, I am happier the "Kid" is getting a better building block for his system that the one he bumped into first on Takealot.

If he buys the above, he's a moron. I'm sure you love him, but he's no my stepson so I can call him a moron for you :D

The Intel platform is end-of-life, meaning any future upgrades would require a higher-tier CPU (like a 14900K or something) or a whole new motherboard and processor.

The AMD setup should have another 2 CPU generations, possibly 3. Meaning he could run that for years to come, upgrade the CPU and extend longevity even more. The 7600X is also faster than the 14400F in gaming,

There is no reason to buy the Intel setup beyond stubbornness.
