Guys you've given some awesome advise just skimming over the thread earlier. Thanks a ton. Still need to decide whether to get the cheaper asrock motherboard or the one Ponder linked. I'm a bit of a Gigabyte/Asus fan and never bought asrock before.

F'ing busy today so will pop back and go over your posts in more detail.

Depends if the R300 really matters :p
i got this exact Asrock, I have had a AsRock MB before, nothing wrong with them. If they were priced the same i would probably have gone for the Gigabyte, If you are going to run Windows 7 rather go for the Gigabyte. But if you are planning to run Windows 10 and would like to save R300 towards that 16GB ram i linked you, rather go for the Asrock :)

Just remember these are Micro-ATX. make sure your Case supports them, also remember they are really really small. They look lost in a big case :p

Ask your friend if he really need a mouse and mouse pad combo that costs more than the CPU.

I'm sad to say but seeing as he already has a GPU it's a bit late to ask now, for the price he paid for the 280X and the money he could've saved on "cool looking" accessories he could've bought a GTX 970 or R9 390, which would've given him ~20FPS more in most games.

Yeah anyway. He's still looking around and making changes. The mouse has been changed to the Sensei raw at R700, the rest is still not finalised

Also tell him to take a tape measure and see how big that mouse pad is, he will most likely be just as happy with one that costs half that, and tell him to look at a cheaper motherboard since he can't overclock the CPU anyway, from the money he saves on the mouse, mouse pad and motherboard he can maybe get a SSD.

Yep he's looking for a cheaper motherboard now he's already got a ssd, case has been changed to either the p400 or s340. He seems set on the big mousepad though.

Lots of Rebeltech fans around here. I've never used them before. Where are they based? I'm in Randburg.

Hi all, I have been out the PC building game for a couple of years, last machine I built had a 2.6 GHz dual core CPU with 4 GB DDR2 800 memory, that was probably 8 or so years ago. Not that I was a expert back then, but I'm in the process of getting myself back up to speed with things again.
I want to build myself a new machine as the old one can't be upgraded anymore and want to know what to go for these days. I'm not a gamer so don't need a top spec speed freak machine, I just want something solid which would once again last a couple of years and offer some form of upgradability in future in terms of RAM and CPU.
So first question, what's the best and most future proof to go for, socket LGA1150 or 1151?
Motherboard Asus, MSI or Gigabyte, are their best and worse in terms of brand?
And on the memory front, must I go for a DDR3 or DDR4 board, which is best in terms of cost of the RAM modules?
For now I'll probably only get a i3 processor, I won't be needing anything bigger, I also won't be getting a dedicated GPU, onboard will be just fine.

So thinking is budget around R5000, new chassis nothing fancy, decent motherboard, 4 to 8 GB RAM and entry to mid level i3 processor. I still have a fairly new 2 TB Seagate harddrive which will do for now, I'll add a SSD later.

That should work fine for you. For future upgrades I am not to sure, but on the Intel side they also change motherboard sockets every generation or two anyways. That A10 has a very nice onboard GPU.

A future upgrade will be a dedicated AMD GPU, maybe the new 480 with a speculated price of R4000. Or a compatible GPU that can crossfire with your IGP, R7 range.

Thanks, but for some reason can't give you the reason, I have never been a AMD fan.

Mostly on Intel also, it is way better. But AMD is cheaper and the APU series caters more towards your needs than a Intel system can in that price point. The CPU on it's own is going to be in the R2000 area I think.

R3729 - Intel Skylake Core i5-6500
R1174 - GIGABYTE GA-H110M-S2PH DDR4
R657 - 2x Corsair ValueSelect 4GB DDR4-2133
R901 - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" SATA6G 7200rpm
R786 - SeaSonic S12II 520w 80 PLUS Bronze
R7248 - TOTAL

GPU:
R3699 - Galax GeForce GTX 960 EXOC 4GB
R4199 - PowerColor Radeon R9 380X 4GB
Or there is this GTX 970 in Toti going for R4000

Depending on which GPU you choose that will leave you with R553 - R1053 for a chassis

Going with this original build Ponder. Might use the rest of my budget for a higher end GPU.

In my personal opinion that is not he best build though, latest yes. For the price of that skylake CPU you could get a haswell i5+MB+8GB RAM and have change left if you look at the bundle deals on carbonite. I would not purchase that spec I posted but that is what was asked for. All the savings I would pump into a killer GPU.

Ok. Will have a check on carbonite later.

Edit: You were spot on the money. Found one. All three for 3.7k brand new.

Found this on carbonite earlier the week for R800. Intel DH67BL Motherboard + G630 cpu + 4gb ram

My question, should I go 2nd gen I5/I7 or 3rd gen I5/I7? Is there speed increase between the two generations? This is a pc I am building for my daughter so she can also game a bit with dad. :) Looking at putting a R9 270 GPU on that pc first before I upgrade the CPU.
