Pulled the trigger and decided to eventually upgrade my aging NAS solution.
Going with a HP Microserver and 4 x 6TB WD Reds. Only bought 1 drive for now and will get the rest later once my bank balance recovers

Make sure you break your bank a bit more and get some ECC RAM!

Yup, 16GB ECC is going in from the start.
It's Error Correcting memory. Typically only used in servers to prevent data corruption; it is a must in a FreeNAS build because of the way ZFS works.
I don't think it works on any CPU.

In other news, 1050 specs are doing the rounds: 4GB GDDR5, and decent clock speeds. Oh and it doesn't require a power cable apparently.

It's not a must per se (i.e. it will still work fine without ECC memory) but is highly recommended.
Yeah, I know but if you go on the FReeNAS forums and say you are using normal RAM you will get lynched!

Probably not on the same level as some of the monitors being discussed here, but I am surprised at how much technology has improved. I had a 2009 Samsung SW2333 that I replaced with Dell SE2216H and the colour reproduction is incredible. Yes, I can tell in Xonotic that this is VA panel and not a TN, but it is not really noticeable unless you really look of it. Who thought you can get such a good viewing experience for less than R2k.

For ~R200 more you could've bought the SE2416H which is a IPS panel with 6ms response time.

Would it not have been better in the long run to build your own, even if it meant losing out on the MicroServer case.

Not really, it would have been way too much effort believe me I looked for alternatives.
The things that I needed for this build:
1. Small form factor
2. Price
3. ECC support
4. 4+ drive bays
The biggest challenge was finding a mITX board with ECC support - I can probably get one but at a price. Even without ECC support, building an equivalent box with locally sourced parts was more expensive than the Microserver route.

So are you tossing the 8gb ram included and changing it to the 16gb ecc..? Are you going to run raid?

Only 4GB ram included, it'll go with the other memory lying around that I don't use.
Yes, going to be doing a 4 x 6TB raidz2 array.
