Hello,

Yes the case is from I think 2005, I'm a bit nostalgic, and well why not its been sitting in a garage for I dont know how long.

I can't change the MB. So I guess Ill drop down to the 6th GEN CPU as I literally know no one who has a skylake.

Also wrt the CPU being too much for the GPU, I was told to rather go for the 1060 in a previous post for my set up.

I MIGHT just be selling my i7 6700K

The 1070 is fine and will not be bottlenecked by an i5, you also have all that OC headroom with the k cpu.

I feel like I've been left with more questions than what I came with hahaha.

Thoughts on this build to replace an aging i5 notebook for as close as possible to R6000, with the prospect to add an RX480 in a month or two? Peripherals and O/S catered for:

A few things:

Use two memory sticks for dual channel, if you think you'll only ever need 8 then get 2 x 4GB, otherwise 2 x 8GB.
An SSD is a must imo, even a small one just for Windows.
Odd choice of drive, that appears to be a surveillance-focused range.

You could possibly save some bucks going for the Intel G4560, only very slightly slower than the i3 but R900 cheaper.

Thanks for the feedback! The board has a M.2 slot so I will pop one of those in there later on as well.
My limited tech brain thinks that the 7100 may be slightly more future-proof as I am mainly looking to refresh the GPU in the future and not the base hardware.
Is there real world benefit to be had with dual channel?

Wait for the new AMD release in the next couple of weeks.

Change the HDD to a WD 1TB Blue.
Look at a cheaper case.
Use the savings from the above two for an i5 cpu. You can get an i5-4590 for R2100 and i5-6500 for R2600. http://gtxgaming.co.za/index.php?route=product/category&path=73

Why i5? You mentioned getting a rx 480 and depending on the game the i3 can bottle neck a 480/1060

That i3 seems fast enough, close to a 3rd gen i5. That extra bit of juice over the previous gens won't bottleneck it.
Might be a good idea to start moving away from 1150 now, think I give those boards a year before they start being phased out.

So I would either go i5-6500 or the 7th gen i3

There is very little to no difference between the 6100 & 7100 in gaming, the 6100 bottlenecks some gaming titles so I can't see why the 7100 won't do the same.

^, very much yes but that board is kinda intended for people intending to overclock. You could go a bit cheaper if you wanted.

Edit: I lie...i misread the power phases and stuff, it's not actually able to do any overclocking. Still 2k is a bit steep for a board to just plug stuff into. It is very nice though.

What would you recommend?

Just get one of the cheaper h110 or b150 boards.

The b150 will give you 6 sata ports vs 4, more usb ports and some of them have 4 dimm slots whereas the h110 usually only have two.

Make sure you get a DDR4 board and not the ones that do ddr3.

You guys are legends, thanks :)
H110 chipset would serve as well...this one is the same sort of aesthetic as the Asus you posted.

http://www.wootware.co.za/msi-h110m-gaming-ddr4-lga1151-chipset-micro-atx-skylake-desktop-motherboard.html

That one is a bit pricier than other H110 boards....you could save another few hundred going something without the "GAMING" tag. Or you can stick with the pretty one :)
