Gaming wise I was thinking of playing like the original duke nukem 3d definitely not expecting 4k gaming...

Ok cool so the above processor should eliminate the need for a graphics card as far as playing 4k content smoothly is concerned?

And a good motherboard to pair it with? This is where I get confused

All motherboards for the most part are created equally, some more so than others, but for your needs just get this:

ASRock B250M-HDV

It's only R1087, it supports the CPU you want, it has 6 SATA and 6 USB 3 ports and it even has a M.2 slot if you want to get a cheap OEM SSD off of Carbonite.

Duke Nukem 3D came out for PS4 and Xbone a year or two ago :)

Check if you can find an Intel G4600...it's much cheaper than the i3-7100 but offers similar performance (apart from AVX2 which is not important in a media \ gaming PC). A G4560 would be even cheaper (like half the price) but uses a slightly older model integrated graphics which is not good if you're not going to have a dedicated graphics card. I don't have numbers on hand but a G4560 and a R1500 GPU would probably beat an i3-7100 by a distance in gaming.

The B250 chipset is the budget-friendly chipset for Kaby Lake so you can stick with the board Soul suggested (unless you find a cheaper one somewhere).

I don't think that's good advice, Netflix 4K requires minimum a 7th Gen Core CPU, not that the ones you listed aren't capable of 4K but it won't work with Netflix, best to get a Core CPU to future proof.

What about the Intel Kaby Lake Core i5-7400 from PotterH for R1700?
 
^, good point re Netflix 4K - I forgot about that stupidity with the Kaby Lake requirement...I also don't have a 4K TV or a 25mbps line - 0 for 3 :p.

ja, that i5 is a great deal - 2700 for board and CPU leaves a decent stack for mem, PSU, case.

Thanks everyone! Umm... potterh a quick search brings up carbonite, though can't find anything on there...

Another stupid question... all the cheap motherboards seem to be missing an hdmi port on the back so like anything above the R1300 point seems to have hdmi out on the board... does that seem right?

Learnt something new today, The 100 series chipset ASRock R3.0 boards are Kaby Lake ready out of the box so no need for a BIOS flash.

R722 - ASROCK H110M-DVS R3.0
R844 - ASROCK H110M-HDV R3.0

Just checked again, I somehow didn't see it on the picture or notice it in the description, it was listed last instead of first.

So if it does in fact work with Kaby Lake that's another R200 saved.

I fired a mail off to Rebeltech yesterday inquiring if they could flash the board before sending it off and the reply was no need to as the newer R3.0 boards are kaby lake ready out of the box.

This is a good thing for budget builds as those boards are the cheapest you can get.

It's been about 8 years since I upgraded, so I'm looking to purchase a new budget-mid level gaming PC.
I must admit, I'm not very clued up about specs and hardware these days - it's been that long. I'm currently sporting a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400, 5GB DDR2, ASUSTek P5Q LGA775 motherboard with a Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT :)

I've tried to put something together myself, but am looking for any advice on what I'm missing, could change up, or cut down to slim costs a bit.
I've priced the components from evetech as they seem to be fairly competitive, but this is just for budgeting.

I'm considering bumping the memory to 16GB for an additional R1311, but it's already slightly above what I'd like to spend.
Do I need a CPU cooler here, or will the stock one suffice?
Is the GTX 1060 going to last me a little while?
