You could oc the 2060s, will probably still run cooler and quieter.

So my GTX 1070 (I suspect) has recently started dying. I bought it 2nd hand about 2 years ago post crypto mining crash for quite a good deal. The owner denied ever having mined on it, and even gave me the original receipt (it was about 7 months old at the time).

My monitor has been going black randomly - as if the signal momentarily disappears - and then comes back on its own. I booted up the other day, and could see nothing except weird artifacting - vertical multicoloured bars all across the screen. Reboot did nothing. Reseated everything, and could boot normally. Yesterday, on boot, the screen displayed a blue box about 1/4 of the screen's size top left. Again, went through the reseating procedure until it was normal again.

It's too late to RMA or exchange it, so I guess it's time for an upgrade. I really like the look of the RX 5700 XT - but am put off by the dozens of threads and videos everywhere of people complaining about the dogshit drivers AMD keeps putting out. As well as loads more with fixes just to get the card to sort of run. It also runs quite hot (nothing new for AMD). Also, I'd be pushing my limits with my 550W PSU. But, bang for your buck, it's one of the best cards out there. And there are also loads of people who haven't had any issues at all.

Next option, and for the same price, is the 2060 Super. The chip and drivers have been out for a while now, and the card is only slightly behind the 5700 XT. I could literally just swap it out with my current card, and be on my way.

So, do I play it safe? Or gamble on something that could be an amazing card now, or struggle for like 10 months when AMD eventually get the drivers right?

It's a bit slower overall but not massively and it has RTX (although not that widely used I enjoyed it thoroughly in Control using my 2060 Super).

EDIT: Just noticed Wootware hasn't got stock of that card right now, it's still a good deal though!

Never really had to OC my cards, but nice to know it has head room if needed. The cooler/quieter bit also appeals to me, as I've specifically built a "silent PC" - and I don't feel like shelling out for a new PSU if I don't have to.

I never bought into the RTX hype to be honest. It looks good, but not worth the overall performance sacrifice. If I was really into it, I'd go for the daddy, the 2080ti. So wasn't really going to be deciding factor between going for the 2060S or 5700 XT.

As for pricing/stock, I live in the UK, and there are loads available and at decent enough prices. I quite like Gigabyte, and may just stick with them.

The 5700XT is more 2070 Super than 2060 Super performance.
 
My 3950X arrived this morning.

This thing is beastly, I timed a full rebuild of our Plex Media Server project in Visual Studio:

With my 2700X: 8min 3sec
With my 3950X: 3min 35sec

Plus I can now run my 32GB 3600Mhz memory kit at its rated speed with tighter timings than the XMP profile (CL19 -> CL16).

The latest Gigabyte BIOS is broken and doesn't allow the CPU to boost properly but have downgraded to an earlier version which works perfectly.

Selling your 2700X?
 
Hi guys,

So giving my brother my ancient 3770k machine and looking for something both cost effective and around the same performance if possible.

Any ideas? Just need a board and cpu and possibly some ram. Possibly a case as well. Will get the GFX off Carb a little later.

I'm sure you could find a nice B350/Ryzen5 1600/16GB DDR4 bundle for cheap. I'd imagine they can be had for very little nowadays. R3500 would be a fair estimation if I had to guesstimate a price

R4100 on Evetech so will look around in Carb for something similarish.
 
Now... to find the rarest computer parts in this country.

Where the hell can I find motherboard screws and all the other small screws???

R4100 is too much IMHO for a Ryzen 5 1600 build. They are a few years old already, although the youngest 1600's are actually built on the new 12nm process - so they are essentially an underclocked 2600. But I doubt that Evetech sells the 'revised' 1600's

Hmm.. was looking to go in under R5k but will scrape the forums and see what’s what and read up on AMD
