Walk into any local pc shop and ask, they should have plenty of the stuff lying around.
 
Reminds me of my first build. Finished it, and stood there admiring my handiwork. And then I noticed the IO shield still in the mobo's box...

I did something similar with my first build.

I routed the 12V cable for the CPU power behind the motherboard only to get it caught on one of the stand offs and not reach the socket.

Then to remove the board I needed to first remove the cooler as well. It took me a good hour just to get that small oversight sorted
 
So. The fever got me, and I've been checking out benchmarks, deals, etc, for a new GPU. And late last night I realised that I failed to consider my CPU in the whole equation.

My trusty Ryzen 5 1500x will simply choke the life out of a 2060 Super and definitely an RX 5700 XT.

Luckily, AMD CPUs are still way cheaper than Intel, and AM4 boards are backwards compatible with all generations of Ryzen. I have a B350 Gaming 3, which is pretty solid as I don't OC.

As first step would be the CPU (and I'll probably get the GPU at the same time), would it be worth it to go for the R5 2600, or just throw the extra £60 at it and get the 3600? While I know the 2600 will pretty much be a straight swap (I'm already on the f25 BIOS), I've read a few posts the reckon getting the 3xxx to run properly take some doing.

Thoughts?

Flash your BIOS to F50a so long and get the 3600 if you're ok with the £170 price. The performance/£ is in favour of the 2600 though, the 3600 has that extra ipc...

Started the flashing process last night. Anything above f25 is hella unstable (BSOD, etc). Tried in increments but doesn't like f50a for some reason. People say it sometimes happens when you don't have 4x RAM (which I do), so a bit baffled. Anything above f25 also tanks when I enable XMP.

Looks like your board has its own opinion on 2600 vs 3600 :D

At 1440p, the 2600 is pretty compelling with the current discounts.
 
DRAM calculator got my hopes up then left me hanging :p...it doesn't support Hynix AFR (the chips G.Skill used in the 2x F4-3200C16-8GTZR sticks from my previous PC) at speeds beyond 3466. Finding optimal settings for 3600 has been an off-and-on project for the weekends. BIOS profiles really come in handy for messing around with stuff like that.

Currently at 3600 16-19-19-35-56 from 3200 16-18-18-38-56. The trc can be tuned down to 54 (maybe) and trfc after (448 at the moment).

AIDA latency results show some decent improvement (from 76.2ns for default 3200mhz to 67.7ns for the semi-tuned 3600mhz) -

Tuning quick-ish memory to be quicker doesn't do much for normal use but the tinkering is fun (apart from the testing).

Deepcool make decent enough kit. Having said that, the stock coolers are actually pretty good anyway. The TDP for the 3600 is 65W - with that aftermarket cooler it doubles, so something to be aware of.

Was researching the differences between the 3600 and 3600X and the only thing really with regards to performance is the 3600X's cooler is 95W compared to the other's 65W. Benches showed that using the 65W cooler on the 3600X made it perform exactly like a 3600 - as only 1fps difference in some cases. With that info, you should get quite a bit more headroom with the aftermarket cooler.

Hi Guys. Hoping for someone to point me in the right direction.

My buddy got an unused MSI Z170A Krait X3 Mobo for free. Now the issue is I need to find a LGA 1151 6th gen CPU and some ram. Ram shouldn't be a problem to find. The CPU and fan is a different story, hence the thread. He be using it to stream, play DVDs for the kids and to learn Autocad. So was thinking of a middle of the range i5.

So if someone can point me in the right direction for the best prices.

I have looked on Takealot, Matrix no stock. Wootware has i5-9400F for R3067.00

The Z170 chipset will support 6th gen (Skylake) and 7th gen (Kaby Lake)....both will be hard to find new and over-priced (so it's good the motherboard was free :thumbsup:). potterH seems to have some i5 7500's secondhand - check what else he's got that might work for you and go from there - http://www.mineaway.co.za/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=2543.

Edit: I may not have been clear - Intel doesn't currently allow later generations of processors to be used on older series motherboards (they could but that's a different discussion). At best, you get 2 generations of CPU per chipset so anything after the 7th gen will not work on a z170 motherboard (this includes the 9400F).

I had a look at takealot, and saw this (https://www.takealot.com/intel-core-i5-9400f-2-90-ghz-6-core-processor/PLID56051995) at around R3500 , but then as you say wootware also has the 9400F but for R3067. I was wondering if these two are the same processor or similar enough ?

What would be a semi decent Mobo to go with that for around or less that 2K ? If anyone else has some advice , it is also much appreciated

Buy AMD this time around...it's almost certain you will get a better all-around PC going with AMD (unless free parts fall in your lap like Morpheos's buddy). What do you use your PC for and what kind of budget are you looking at?
