The PC Build Thread

i know most of you'll don't like evetech but considering current GPU prices this is not a bad deal for 1080p gaming

R7999 for a 6600 XT

For anyone interested in the 6600XT, remember that AMD found it wise to only use 8 PCIe lanes. That's all good and well if you use PCIe 4.0, but on 3.0 you may be limited in certain scenarios.

What's a mid/high Intel PC build these days? Decent mobo etc. No Overclocking so non K is perfect. GPU wise I was thinking 3060ti.

Also where can I get solid Screen mounting arms in CPT?

Budget around R30k all in

Ok so we a small development team and they told me they thinking of getting a new server. Currently we using an old equvalent i7-3770 xeon server and a bit dated. There will be Virtual machines run via hyper-v for testing and other stuff so was thinking of getting a PC instead as a server is way to expensive. We not to worried of uptime etc.

Is it a good idea to do it? I know many desktop motherboards don't have ECC support but that's not such a big deal and by the time we going to buy it DDR5 will be out and it has ECC sort of build in as a standard

Are you not worried about stuff like reliability? If your server dies, what will you do?

You don't need stuff like maintenance etc?

If it is purely a machine to run long running tasks on, then I'd suggest a 16 core AMD 5950X with 64GB of RAM. Should be a massive upgrade over your current machine.

If you need more firepower, go Threadripper 32 core with 128GB of RAM.

Hi

Building a pc for friend he looking for something with integrated graphics for time being till GPU prices come down, recommended a 5600G for his budget not sure what would the intel equivalent be any recommendations would be appreciated.

Need:

CPU : currently 5600G(still deciding)
MOBO : (Non micro atx )
RAM :
PSU :

Budget : R10k or less for the above

GPU : add at a later stage something around RTX3060 / 5700xt

Have:

CASE : Antec NX260
SSD : Kingston 512GB A2000

Reliability is one thing but not a deal breaker. I'm sure gaming is going to be more stressful on the system than any of the Virtual machines together. I just don't want to struggle when having many Virtual; machines running.

Like I said it's for small testing in different scenarios and load per vm will be low to medium. That 5950x looks good. I think we should wait for the new chips as the waiting time won't be to long. DDR5 with the extra size and possibly more cores will be better.

wootware added more 6600 xt, evetech sold quickly.

Its a really good mining card, so grab it before miners sees it.

What are the better websites to look for PC parts?

I need to build a mid tier AMD system.

We really need a sticky for this.

https://www.rebeltech.co.za/

I'm missing one right now, it's the one that has the Rectron list on their site.

Thanks, can't the first post be edited and that list added?

I often use comx.co.za (since about 2007). They have a pick-up office in Centurion. Pricing and service has always been good

Anybody knows how the stock cooling is on that 5600G? AMD's of the past didn't fair well with stock heatsink and fan.
In past? Like pre ryzen? As the stock coolers are fine on the Ryzens, only one that's just okay is the Wraith stealth, but I'm using 2 and they are fine

Yes, like I have the FX-8320, had to buy myself a mother of a heatsink and fan. On the stock heat sink, the warning notifications would pop-up while a game starts launching.
Thanks, good to know. Looks like I'll be upgarding my 10 year old PC, soon.

The 8320 probably uses twice the power the 5600G does under load so there's a lot less heat to dissipate.

Check for AM4 mounting kits for whichever cooler you ended up with...it will be quieter and run cooler / boost better than the stock cooler.

Will this be in a room with aircon?

At 22C ambient with 3 case fans cpu running at full load you're looking at ~80C. With our summer temps and no aircon I would look at an aftermarket cooler using one or two 120mm+ fans to keep things chilled.
