So turned out there was an issue with one of the pipes not pushing through the liquid. Changed the cooler out from a ML360L V2 ARGB to a Corsair iCUE H150i Elite Capellix. Only unit they had in stock.

Temps are ranging from 80-85C with 100% load @ 5GHz. Using Intel Extreme Utility to boost to 5.1GHz results in 95-100C with thermal throttling. Amazing what 0.1 GHz boost is causing.

Still playing with the memory timings. Kept it on 4800Mhz with lower specified timings. Seems good for now.

And that 100 Mhz is like 1-2% of performance...that's a perfect illustration of the inefficiency at the end of voltage-frequency curve. It takes a lot of power to get a little more frequency above a certain point (different for different CPU's and GPU's but they all have them).

You're going to have a good time finding that sweet spot of performance, temperature and noise - I enjoy setting up a new machine to get as much performance as possible while remaining quiet.

What's the R23 score? AIDA64 memory benchmark? Let's have it.

Nice, how many cores is it running at 4.8ghz?
 
Lol, 285W...that's awesome. The CPU is bang on where it should be performance-wise (bearing in mind there's probably a bit of loss) so that's neat.

That's a lot of memory bandwidth and a lot of latency :D

Managed to push up to 5200Mhz on the RAM, seems stable:

It seems the board is not running the specified timings?

Latency is lower at 80ns, but still seems high?

From the above 2600x2 should be at 40,40,40,80,125 and 1.25V
Currently at 38,38,38,83,121 and 1.25V

Running at 5000Mhz, latency seems much better, but not sure how low one can go realisticly with CAS40?

I don't know how the different OEMs' DDR5 work right now and it will improve as the technology matures but as DDR4 overclocking goes, you usually have to increase some timings in exchange for increasing the frequency - usually trcd, trp and trfc have to go up for *some* bump in frequency. That *some* depends on the memory IC - Samsung b-die can scale a lot better than Hynix and Micron. My Hynix CJR is at 3733mhz 16-19-19-29-42 from XMP @ 3200 16-18-18-38-56.

I suggest finding someone who's overclocked memory with your IC's in them and see how it behaved. Some timings can get lower, some have to be loosened - it all depends on how that particular memory behaves.

The 12600 isn't worth the price bump over the 12400 - Intel are asking for ~30% more money for 9% higher boost clock. That's a poor proposition - you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the 2 CPUs with the naked eye (they would benchmark a few percentage points apart).

I think 10 grand should be enough to get you going - I'd consider this a good budget build.

What kind of cooler would this need?

Seriously considering building another box, putting in my 3070ti, and then moving it to my lounge. Couch gaming so much more comfortable.

Would going from a 5900x to this i5 change general gaming performance in a perceptible negative way. I know this is game dependent

The stock cooler would work fine at the default power limit (which is more than enough headroom for gaming).

The 12400 is capable of over 120fps in AAA games at 1080p and higher resolutions move the load to the GPU so I can't see any issues moving from the 5900x.

I ended up going with this combo

Could've probably managed to save about R1000 by dropping to the ASUS PRIME B660M-K (but then you lose 2 ram slots, and a NVMe slot), getting 3200MHz RAM, and a slightly cheaper SSD.

All in all there doesnt seem to be much "budget" Alder Lake stock available at the moment, unless you willing to order from multiple sources, especially on the motherboard side of things.

I will then move my 3070ti into this box, and use it in the lounge.

Kind of conned myself into building this box by telling myself I already have pretty much the best gaming monitor available (LG CX55 OLED) and that I should be using it for ALL gaming :whistling:
I could say there are other "inconveniences" in my current setup, like gaming where I work, and having to reboot into Windows


Also then purchased the Corsair K63 wireless lapboard combo and a Logitech G305 Lightspeed.

Combo'd with a Series X controller, this should make for some excellent couch PC gaming
 
What's a Fractal Design Ion+ 760W 80+ Platinum power supply like?

I can get one that's apparently unused for R1200.
I've read a few reviews and some say it's decent in most regards but some shortcomings, I can't really understand all the jargon.

This one for instance:

wow couldn't find any pricing for the 760W but looking at the other model prices below I would guess in 2021 they probably sold for around 2K

Thanks man, how did you find those prices, Wayback machine?

The ION+ has been replaced with the ION+2 In 2021 so maybe that's why there's not many prices floating around.
