Guys

Some may have seen the question in the Hardware Bargains thread, but what's the consensus here about these 2 deals

XFX Speedster SWFT 319 AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT

I'm really considering getting one of these cards to replace my ancient GTX 760 with 2gb of ram :laugh:

But the question I have is, is it better to spend the cash on a RTX3080 purely because of DLSS?

Is DLSS that important going forward, especially since AMD supports tech like freesync, which is also cheaper than g-sync? And other benefits like Smart Access Memory?

G-sync works with freesync monitors. DLSS and the better ray tracing performance is pretty nice, but it’s going to depend on the games you play.

Either way, coming from a 760 it’s gonna blow your mind o_O which cpu do you have?

You seem to keep GPUs for a long time. nVidia also supports FSR 2.0, and I would want nVidia for the better RT support.
If you are sure you don't want good RT support, then I suppose the AMD equivalent is a good deal. I also think long term 10GB VRAM might be a little limiting.

Well this is step 1 in upgrading the entire system, I'm currently sitting with an i5 4460... I'm thinking of going to a Ryzen 5 to take advantage of the Smart Access Memory function.

Yes I see your dilemma, that’s why it’s tough to tell you what to do :laugh: if you still have to upgrade the rest of your system, saving some cash might be a good idea? It’s better to go with Zen 4 next month for platform longevity but then you’ll have to pay extra for DDR 5, so perhaps use the money there. Depends on your budget. If I were you, I’d get the 6800 but that’s because I wouldn’t spend R15k on an old card, I’d rather keep the R5k for a future upgrade to a 5080 or whatever, the 6800 is good enough for now. //personal bias but it seems to be what you need

Then there’s the 3070, slower but has DLSS:laugh:

If you mean AMD's drivers aren't as optimised at launch and get better over time, then yes.

Nvidia seems to get more out of their cards early on.

The Fine Wine thing is pretty slick marketing though.

Are you planning a monitor upgrade? What resolution and frame rate are you targeting with your new machine?

The monitor is the last thing to change, I currently have a standard LG 1080P

I'm wanting to build a system that will last a few years before dropping big cash on it again :laugh:

Starting with the GPU, then going to the CPU, Mobo, RAM, and finally monitor.

I'm happy with my SSD & HDD combo for now

In what time frame is this all happening? All three cards are waaay overpowered for a 1080p monitor.

Those are good deals in comparison to where the market was before but probably not compared to where the market is heading. Nvidia and AMD have been price-cutting a lot to get inventory out the door. You might find a 3090 Ti isn't much more expensive in October.

It's definitely a much better time to be shopping now than anytime since the pandemic.

I have decided to wait on my own upgrade, Jensen confirmed the oversupply issues in last financials.
“We found ourselves with excess inventory,” says Huang. “Our strategy is to sell-in well below the current sell-through levels in the marketplace to give the channel an opportunity to correct.”

With the ETH merge in Sept and I definitely want to see how the used market reacts because it seems if Nvidia is price cutting aggressively on new stock and with mining GPUs hitting the second hand market, I should be able to pick up a much better GPU for the same money 1-2 months from now.

% cut do you expect? Also what about rising inflation? 15k cards going 5k?

I didn’t know your system had this many bottlenecks, so my new advice is to wait until you can get everything at once. Your monitor will hold your GPU back, the cpu will bottleneck your GPU, so you aren’t going to see the full benefit of any one component right now.

If you wait, it does seem like you will get better pricing, and possibly wider options.
