WHAT KIND OF SCUMBAG DOES THIS TO PORSCHES?

German police were on Thursday investigating whether an overnight suspected arson attack at a Porsche dealership in Hamburg was linked to the upcoming G20 summit which the city is hosting.

Eight cars were nearly entirely destroyed by fire at the dealership in the suburb of Eidelstedt.

Investigators found accelerants at the scene and believe the fire was deliberate, a spokesman said.

Alongside the tens of thousands of peaceful protesters, authorities anticipate that up to 8000 potentially violent demonstrators from Germany and abroad could disrupt the G20 summit, which is set to take place on Friday and Saturday in Germany's second-largest city.

Record sales for Porsche: More than 126 000 sold so far in 2017

Porsche reports its best sixth month sales figures in 2017 so far. With 126 497 vehicles sold worldwide, the automaker exceeded its record figure set in 2016 by 7% in the first half of 2017.

Macan, Panamera lead the way

The Macan remains the main driver of the automaker's growth with the highest-volume model line. However, the new Panamera, launched in SA earlier in 2017, has achieved the strongest percentage increase in the first six months of the year, with sales of the four-door sports car seeing a rise of 54%.

China has established itself as the largest single market, with a significant increase of 18% to 35 864 vehicles.

Alongside the Panamera, the Macan recorded a double-digit growth in the first half of 2017: Deliveries of the sporty SUV increased by 11%, reaching the 50 000 mark. Demand for the 718 Cayman and Boxster models and the Cayenne also grew. The Cayenne was the second most popular Porsche model line with 35 601 vehicles sold.

The US ranked behind the Chinese market with 27 568 deliveries. In Germany, the sports car manufacturer remained at the record level achieved in the previous year. With 15 474 units, vehicle deliveries to customers increased by 1%.

Here’s what drove Porsche’s best first half year ever

Porsche has reported its best ever first half of a year in sales, with the 126 497 units delivered worldwide up to the end of June 2017 exceeding the previous record figure by seven percent.

And it’s the Macan that remains the main driver of this growth and the highest-volume model line globally. Indeed, the compact crossover recorded double-digit percentage growth in the first half of 2017, with deliveries up 11 percent to past the 50 000-mark.

Still, Porsche points out that the new Panamera achieved the strongest percentage increase in the first six months of the year, with sales of the new four-door sportscar rising by 54 percent.

According to Detlev von Platen, member of the executive board responsible for sales and marketing, the figures prove that the new Panamera has made quite an impact.

“The enthusiastic response from customers has been overwhelming. The plug-in hybrid versions and the new Sport Turismo version of the Panamera will provide us with even more momentum,” Von Platen said.

Demand for the 718 Cayman and Boxster models as well as the Cayenne also grew, with the latter proving the brand’s second most popular model line globally, with 35 601 vehicles delivered worldwide.

China has established itself as the largest single market for the brand, with a significant increase of 18 percent to 35 864 vehicles in the first six months of the year. The US market ranked behind the Chinese market during the reporting period with 27 568 deliveries, while Germany added 15 474 units.

And South Africa? Well, a little bit of maths based on Naamsa sales figures shows that Porsche sold some 645 units locally from the beginning of January to the end of June 2017, with the Cayenne (224) easily proving the most popular product. The Macan, meanwhile, accounted for 127 units locally in that time.

PORSCHE CONSIDERING DITCHING DIESEL, ADMITS CEO

Porsche is set to put its Mission E concept into production. And this new electric strategy may well prove the end of diesel-powered models from the automaker.

Porsche’s CEO has revealed that the sportscar-maker’s current generation of diesel engines may well be its last.

According to Automotive News, CEO Oliver Blume admitted that the brand was considering ditching diesel.

“Of course we are looking into this issue,” Blume told the publication, before emphasising that “we have not made a decision on it”.

He added that a verdict on diesel would be made by the end of the decade.

Along with the rest of the Volkswagen Group, Porsche is betting big on electric vehicles – a change in strategy seemingly sparked by the diesel emissions scandal – with its first all-electric vehicle (a production version of the Mission E concept) due in the next couple of years.

Porsche boss confirms decision on cutting diesel models is imminent

Oliver Blume discusses the future of diesel at the company

A decision to axe diesel from the entire Porsche range could be taken within the next 12 months, following the company's decision not to offer the new Cayenne with a diesel engine option from launch.

Porsche boss Oliver Blume (pictured) revealed last month that the firm was investigating the future of diesel. He has now confirmed to Autocar that a decision on whether the Cayenne will ever be offered with a diesel engine will follow in the next month.

Porsche has had to stop sales of its outgoing Cayenne Diesel, which uses an Audi-sourced V6 unit, in Germany due to the discovery of what regulators describe as suspect emissions software. This has prevented the engine from carrying over to the new Cayenne.

It's a direction Porsche may have been heading towards anyway, with Blume confirming “diesel is not so important for Porsche”. He said diesel-powered cars made up 15% of its total worldwide sales, mostly in Europe, and the company didn’t develop its own engines, instead sourcing them from elsewhere in the group.

Blume said Porsche will now investigate whether diesel has a place in the Cayenne and in its wider range in the longer term.

“With Cayenne, we have sold a lot in Europe, and diesel is very important for customers,” he said. “There’s no decision yet, but we will do market analysis. The diesels are prepared for the market. What we decide, we will communicate in the first month.”

Porsche R&D boss Michael Steiner also said diesel was “something we’re investigating a lot”.

“What we’ve discussed and what we will investigate deeply this year and next; there could be a chance to start substituting diesel cars,” he said.

Steiner added that there were already signs in Europe of buyers moving away from diesel models: “We don't know if this is a dip and will recover long term. We closely watch the markets.”

Porsche launches car subscription service in the US

Smartphone app-based Porsche Passport subscription service allows drivers access to a 22-model range

Porsche has launched a subscription service for its cars in the US that allows drivers access to up to 22 different models.

The smartphone app-based scheme, called Porsche Passport, is initially being launched in Atlanta, Georgia.

Subscription costs $2000 (£1516) for the entry-level Launch package, which provides access to eight models, including the 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman, Cayenne and Macan S.

The $3000 (£2274) Accelerate package increases the availability to 22 models, including the 911 Carrera S, Cayenne S E-Hybrid, Macan GTS and Panamera 4S.

Included in the price are road tax and registration, insurance and maintenance. A $500 (£379) joining fee is also charged.

The cars can be delivered or picked up by the subscriber, with same-day pick-ups or future arrangements available through the app.

There’s no mileage limit, although membership does depend on background and credit checks. The scheme begins in November.

Volvo has also launched a subscription service for its upcoming XC40 small SUV.

Sales Growth ‘Not So Important’, Says Porsche CEO

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume says that sales growth for the brand is “less important” than meeting the needs of its customers.

“The growth of sales is not so important to Porsche. We had good growth in the last few years, but the number of cars is less important than the needs of customers,” Blume told Autocar.

The 49-year-old added that the Stuttgart-based automaker would “never be a volume brand”, adding that “healthy growth would be 5% a year”.

So, what does that mean for the future direction of Porsche?

“We analyse different segments where the needs from customers are. We had Macan, now we have a car in a new segment with a pure EV. That will be the next step for a new segment for Porsche,” he said, referring to the upcoming launch of the all-electric Mission E.

Blume went on to reveal that the 911 would not go full-electric for some time still.

“With the 911, for the next 10 to 15 years, we will still have a combustion engine. We have combustion engines, then plug-ins as intermediaries, then full EV later on.

“The future concept of 911 will have plug-in built in, but it’s not decided yet if we [will] offer it: 911 is a core business and we need it to be a pure sportscar. When customers want it to be electric, we can be ready.”

Create your own Porsche at Cape Town Studio

This is not your average car dealership. At the first Porsche Studio in the Southern Hemisphere, opened this week in Cape Town’s Victoria and Alfred waterfront, you won’t find long rows of cars lined up for you to choose from.

Sure, there are a few cars standing around for you to sit in and get the feel of, but the Studio is more about interacting with a wider target group, showing you what Porsche can do to help you create your own ultimate car.

You can watch big-screen videos of the various models in real-world settings, with surround-sound to help you understand why Porsche owners prefer to listen to their cars, rather than the radio, and then move to the Trimming and Configuration Labs, to choose colours, wheel and interior options.

In the Exclusive Manufaktur section you can scroll through an almost limitless range of add-on options, test-fit them virtually on your car to see how they’ll look - and then order the resulting, unique Porsche directly from the Studio, even though it doesn’t have a showroom or workshop area.

Your car will be delivered, serviced and maintained by Porsche Centre Cape Town, in Century City - but it was created at the Studio, in much the same way Porsche’s designers develop new models in Stuttgart.

Cape Town gets Southern Hemisphere’s first Porsche Studio

Porsche South Africa has opened a new Porsche Studio in Cape Town, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Situated in the V&A Waterfront, Porsche SA says its new site “adopts an innovative sales format, enabling Porsche to interact with a wider target group”, adding that “visitors will enjoy an immersive brand experience, highlighting a range of Porsche services”.

While the existing Porsche Centre in Cape Town remains the city’s bona fide dealership, the local arm of the German automaker says it will be possible to specify and purchase vehicles directly from the Porsche Studio.

In fact, should a visitor be interested in making a purchase, the brand says their vehicle of choice can be customised in the dedicated “Trimming and Configuration Labs”, with further tailoring possibilities from Exclusive Manufaktur.

You’ll find the new Porsche Studio Waterfront at 3 Waterway House South on Dock Road.
