The Poynting antenna discussion thread

I just set up my new B953 router and I am getting 3 bars.

I am in a complex where it is impossible to mount an areal, so I was looking at either the A-XPOL-0001 or the A-XPOL-0010-01.

Will either of these improve my signal strength? Advice much appreciated.

The XPOL-0001 only yields 2.5dBi gain. You need to be between one signal band and the next to bump up the signal bar. That said, how long is your coax cable? It needs to be as short as possible, say 1.5m-2m OR located quite high up to benefit from elevation and the associated signal increase.

I used the XPOL-0001 successfully for an installation similar to yours.

Im on Telkom Lte and I believe this is the recommended antenna.
A-XPOL-0006

I see it comes with a Mounting Bracket: Universal Swivel Bracket,, ordering online do I need to get cables as well, cant see mention of them being included?
If so which, wont need more than 5m.
Thx

I can't actually say how they perform in the long term. You can order any Poynting product customised to your needs. I have bought antennas with shorter cables on a couple occasions.

Edit:

I've learnt a lot since my various stupid questions, haha.

I can say for the benefit of this thread that the XPOL-0010 was COMPLETELY ineffective for me - so much so that the signal was better with the built-in antennas than when I used that. I'd advise against purchasing it, I think it may be a bit of a dud product.

Azimuth seems to have gotten quite a decent boost out of the XPOL-0001, so I'm thinking of giving that a try but perhaps I should just be jumping straight for the 0006 (I'm on TM).

Hi guys. I've recently received a A-XPOL-0006-10m antenna (Telkom LTE) - any suggestions how I go about figuring out which side of the house to mount it on?

Trial and error really, monitoring your signal data.

Get an idea of where the towers are and point it pretty much.

See my post above #242
Does it come by default with the 10m cable and mounting bracket included or optional extra?
Thx

Default: PBN-Xpol-06-10M
Consist of the Xpol-0006 Antenna and 2 x 10M Cables

If you went for shorter cable they will charge you labor cost. I also did 2m cables to extend from default 5m cable setup.

OK thx.

Strewth I must be going blind, I see it clear as day now on their site, nurse, NURSE!!!:D

Both the 0010 and 0001 haven't worked for me, I guess the gain wasn't high enough?

I wanted to try the high-gain omnidirectional antennas (these: http://www.antennas.co.za/Products/ProductDetails?code=328)

But I see that they don't cover Telkom Mobile frequency :(

Anything else I can try or am I out of options? I believe since I'm on a ground floor unit and can't get anything very high up, it has to be something omni.

Hey Subversion

Most of Poynting's multi-band antennas offer substantial gain and acceptable matching (VSWR) right throughout the whole frequency band, not just the "common" bands. In the technical datasheets they sometimes chose to emphasize performance in certain well-used bands, eg with a blue band in the 1710-2170MHz region as in the graph below (for the OMNI-0069-V3) :

20151001 OMNI-A0069-V3 extract.jpg

Telkom's use of the 2300MHz band for LTE was something of a surprise to everyone (including Poynting, I think!) and not all of the Poynting datasheets mention this band specifically. However that doesn't necessarily mean the antenna won't work there. If you look at the gain/VSWR plot above, you'll see that the OMNI-0069-V3 (PDF datasheet attached) gives around 6.5dBi gain and still reasonable matching (<1.8 VSWR) at 2.3GHz.
In some cases, the antenna itself had to be modified to optimise performance in the "unexpected" band, this gave rise to the -V2 and -V3 variants (as with the XPOL-0002).
Regarding any specific antenna, I would still suggest that you verify this with the technical folks at Poynting to make sure, but don't write any particular antenna off purely on the strength of 2.3GHz not being mentioned - check first!
Note to Poynting : datasheet update(s) needed please!
Edit : Apologies, Poynting - I see there's already an updated version of the datasheet here :erm:

As to your specific situation, bear in mind that although the smaller omni antennas (like the XPOL-0010 and XPOL-0001), do have some gain (generally <3dBi), they also incur some signal loss in the cables. To illustrate, the 5m of HDF195 cable on the XPOL-0001 (2.5dBi gain) will lose about 3dB of signal, so the XPOL-0001 antenna+cable will actually end up being more or less "gain neutral" on its own. The main advantage of these antennas comes from the fact that they give you the ability to put your antenna system where the signal is best, ie near a window, higher up, or outdoors. The signal improvement achieved by having your antenna outside and high up (ideally on the roof) can be massive - easily 10 to 15dBm by itself. One can of course locate the B593 itself (with its own antennas) in the signal sweetspot, but this isn't always practical - though we have seen some people use very creative schemes to put the B593 in the optimum spot and/or to keep antenna cables short!

Where did you try your XPOL-0001 ? Fully indoors, or near a window, or just outside ?

Also remember that Poynting offer an installation service - you may want to consider using them since your situation has some constraints.

Hi everybody. I have the Telkom LTE setup at home. Always had only 1 bar. Average 20 down and 1 or less up. Ping in the 30s. Bought XPOL 0002 V2. Currently in roof and getting 3 bars. Sometime 4 bars. Now, download speed various around 10 and upload increased to 2-4. Ping now in 40s. Before i now do extensive testing by repositioning the antenna and comparing with and without antenna etc, IS IT at all possible that the download speed can actually reduce, whilst the signal went from 1 bar to 3 bars on the H router?

Hy guys ,I d appriciate it if you guys helped me out a bit here.I am an Hardcore gamer currently on xbone and ps4 and I have a problem with my ping and Upload speed readings.

I m on telkom 50GB+50GB running on 2 B593-601 routers (using multisim).I have one router installed in the tv room where it connects one of the xbox ones ,apple tv ,dstv explorer,tv and pc.I get solid 3 bars everyday and on some occasion 4 bar signal but really i have no worry as that one gets speeds between 30 and 40 DL and 3-3.5 UL.

The one i most need help with is the router in my bed rooming that i using for gaiming,it too gets speed similar to the one in the tv room .What really bugs me is the ping...it sits between 39 and 59ms and i would like to decrease it to 29ms.

I am proud to say i have LOS to the Mother of all towers in my area which is actually the Telkom station tower. It is less then 150m away and there are no trees in between.

I've done some few tests using only the internal antennas and also the tests were done on different sever(Distance being the opeserved variable)...I started with largest distance gap which is in Nairobi followed then by CT ,Durban and then Pretoria.

I really dont want to relocate the router as i need it as close as possible to the consoles so i can connect them via LAN.There is a window that about 2m off the ground and i plan to mount the router(inside the house) on the wall at the window as it from there i do have LOS of the tower and there no trees in between ,so i can face the xpol 0006 directly at the tower.

Would you guys say that the Xpol 0006 will provide a gain in Ping and. Upload speed reading?

I also play online Diablo3, pings are in the +/- 250ms region.
If you only 150m away from your called Tower, you should have 5 bars signal.
Long story short 2 towers in my area.
Tower 1 gives 4 bar signal, right at the tower.
Tower 2 gives 5 bar signal, right at the tower. This is the Tower I'm pointing currently to via antenna from home. 1km away, solid 5 bar signal all the time.
Local ping vary between 25 to 40ms at times average. At times 20ms?

Made my self mobile with router, laptop and 12VDC to 220VAC inverter.

I see...coz thing is ,i have the mother tower which is 150m away...then there are two other mini towers which are 300-350m away...so i think my router connect to those mini towers on regular bases since it uses omni directional antennas.

When i used my phone for the last test i was about 290cm away from it and several meters below the tip of the tower(obviously)..so i think that forced it to connect to the big tower and thus i got good results.

Also the structure of my room is a bit tricky ,there is a window in which i have LOS to 1 mini tower and another window in which i have LOS to the other mini tower...as for the big tower...two walls stand between it and the router.

So i'll try out your method first, but i kinda need you to explain to me what 12VDC and 220VAC inverters are and where i can get them.

The 12VDC to 220VAC invertor are sold at most places. For example Camping outlets. Midas etc.
Once you have the device. Plug the adapter in the cigarette lighter plug. Now once the care is started you will have 220VAC on the outlet box. Plug your 220VAC power adapter in the outlet box and the other end of cable in the router.
Your router should now have power. Power up your laptop and connect Ethernet cable to the router. Laptop should run from it own battery supply. You can now connect to router. Insert username and password.
Laptop part is not a requirement. Router will inform you if you are connected to that specific tower. You will see full signal bars on router. (5) 150 Watt DC to AC inverter should be enough power requirements.
Don't plug Router and Laptop at the same time. Inverter will only give you enough power for Router.
If you do a Google search DC to AC inverter. You will get lots of pictures and makes.

@jcheek made some while back post on this subject.

Inefficient. Look for DC-DC converter instead. Some have lead-acid battery charging circuit buit-in (like all UPS's).

Hey guys. I have a Telkom mobile data contract. I get a download speed of about 5mb and upload of about 1.5mb. I have one complaint. The line drops during gaming and it picks up about a minute later. (too late) Signal strength is about 90-95%. I live in a townhouse where I can't put stuff on the roof but I was wondering if I should purchase this antenna A-OMNI-0069-V3 and some how try install it on to the window bars or something maybe using cable ties? Would this still work on the window or am I wasting my time? Would this also help with the connection dropping? Thanks for any input

Why you want to go that route. Get a cigarette plug and a long enough cable with the correct plug end to plug into the router.
I think the router is powered by 12VDC. This is the cheapest solution. You run of your own battery.
