The problem with uncapped mindset in SA

AfriHost and the other ISP's have the right to enforce a limit on what you can download.

Imagine hundreds of people torrenting the latest movies, and totally killing the service for you who just want to get some work done. Fair? No.

How about everyone complaining about the use of the term just not use their service? Show your disgust at their dishonesty by speaking with your wallet. Anyone up for it? Thought so.

Oh do stop moaning about the term uncapped and be glad Mweb et al is doing something about the high cost of bandwidth in SA.

It seems that you want to go back to the dark old ways of 56k dial-up internet... sheesh.

Maybe SEACOM et al can remove their cables as you lot quibble over small things instead of being supportive of Mweb, Afrihost etc...

Otherwise, take a nice cup of STFU and enjoy the cheaper bandwidth.

It's about honesty. Every Advertiser loves to make out that his product is actually better than it really is. so they use fancy terms and appealing descriptions to inflate their product.

In this case they are taking a limited product and marketing it as unlimited. Or in other terms... they are telling a lie.

If it was unlimited, then they would have said so.

But there is no cap until you abuse it, or hit the 200Gb mark.

Um, if you can take your head out of your armpit for a few minutes ... you might notice that we actually agreed that it is a great price and a great product.

But we reserve the right to insist that sellers use honest terms in marketing their products. You give them an opening and they will run with it.

And by the way... it was not Mweb that started this ball rolling... I can guarantee you that. They would not have come up with an "uncapped" product unless those of us who have been buying uncapped products for the last few years showed them that there is a significant demand for such a product.

Agreed.

But they should tell you what they're offering then. ;)

You're happy with them calling 200GB "uncapped" because you'd never reach that. I have a good friend who has never exceeded his 3GB cap. Would it be fair for an ISP to sell him a 5GB capped product and tell him it's uncapped just because he'll never hit the cap?

Imagine them actually giving it a more honest name... like "High Usage" ... the nobody would be under any illusions about what they can and cannot do. There would be no need for a " Fair Usage" Policy because everyone would know that it is not really unlimited.

I won't be using it. I'll stick with the honest ISPs.

Agreed with your post totally. 200Gb is a reasonable, and fair usage limit. Comcast do offer 250Gb's on their system - I have personally asked Comcast users to verify that, and it's also in Comcast's T&C's.

Uncapped means there is no cap on the line - as long as you adhere to the T&C and fair usage policies.

Please lets not hold comcast up as any sort of guide to where we should be going. They are a reprehensible company and should not be lauded.

The context of uncapped in this instance means that it is NOT capped until you abuse it. Then it will be capped/throttled/whatever'd.

Very true... these were the same guys who pioneered spying on their users, throttling them without notice, shaping their traffic without notice, and lying to the FTC about their actions! A lovely example of honesty! :D

Have we South African's become so complacent? Uncapped means just that, it's uncapped with no restrictions or any T and C's attached to it. If it's 200GB, sell it like that... stop farking marketing it under the guise of uncapped. Those that feel they have a right to tell people what fair usage might be, do I come into your home and audit your eating habits?

By that definition ANY ISP offering can be called uncapped.

Got yourself a 3GB account? Guess what? It's uncapped until you abuse it by downloading more than 3GB. Otherwise known as a cap.

So basically, it's not uncapped. Uncapped by definition implies that I can use my 4mbps line at full capacity 24/7 using maximum bandwidth without any restriction or consequence.

It's really about language use here. Call a spade a spade and everyone will be quite happy.
