The problem with Vox (.co.za)

yikes, now I look like an idiot

posted the wrong link :P guess that is what happens when you post before your first cup of coffee in the morning :P

already own one of those pcmcia to pci adapters, been sitting in the draw for years

anyway, the actual idea is to get a data card that works with an express card to pcmcia adapter as you suggested earlier - future proof.

Going to try and get this thread back on topic :P

In all my fiddling on the vox router I have managed to break the NAS aspect. Will keep you guys posted regarding fixing this

I have got Upnp to partially work, under windows it sees the upnp device, but all it does is link to the web based GUI. Never worked with UPnP before, so not really sure what I am doing

An interesting point that I will be looking into is that the content sharing seems to be broken, not sure if this is a bug or "feature" in the firmware I am using. I don't really want to roll back the firmware seeing as I have spent so much time getting it up and running.

PS. @Yotch - I will load up some version of openWRT on the 3G router at some stage, but haven't gotten around to it

Ok

Have decided to reset firmware, do everything from scratch, will keep a record and post it here

I am also going to try set up multiple USB devices - the idea being to add a Neotel phone/modem sometime in the next few months (when cpt gets coverage), have a NAS, and set up Upnp for the xbox 360 from an external drive

This is going to be a long haul, but I am sure the end result will be worth it

@Yotch - also decided to upgrade my 3G router with the openWRT firmware

one step ahead

already downloaded the v6 firmware, just waiting till a good time to flash it - probably in the next 30 mins or so

problem with v7 stuff is that the content sharing appears to be broken

will play with v6 and report back

Vox Firmware upgrade

Hi

I upgraded the firmware of my VOX router to the original Thompson version. Everything works fine, but can't get the SIP account setup. It seems to be a problem under the advanced config. I don't know the port settings etc. Can anybody help.

Jaco

@Jaco

i'll check the settings I have working at home this evening.

SIP port is 5060, don't know if that gives you a bit of a headstart

reconfigure vox

Hi
can anyone tell me the telnet command to change my vox base so that I can conncect it with iBurst and as a DHCP client on the current network. Tunasashimi started but never finished, I got logon in as superuser but that is it nothing more and it looks like a firmware issue and not wiring :confused:

All's well and good, but bare in mind...

In order to guarantee a quality service you need to eliminate as many variables as possible.

The lowest latency currently is on Telkom's ADSL (which amazes me)...

If the phone was completely open, and you could connect it to any network, then problems can arise which could cause negative consumer views of the Vox Solution.

Eg1:

Connect it to my Lan which is connected to the ADSL line via a seperate router. Everything goes fine until one day my girlfriend is watching videos on YouTube whilst I am downloading the latest Ubuntu ISOs and for some reason I cannot understand my call is very jerky, with large silent gaps and delays.

This is caused to the fact that most routers don't have decent QoS and data packets get the same consideration as Voice Packets. The phone's built in router give voice priority over data...

Eg2:

Connect through Iburst... well if things were not working very well, and the iBurst high sight starts having intermittent problems and causes 3000ms latency then who will the customer bitch at? Vox of course...

Want VoIP on iBurst then get iBurst's phone...! It also comes with an 087 number.

Eg3:

Connect it through a Asterisk server.... something goes wrong and my calls can't connect... do we blame our Asterisk server? Vox of course...

Eg4:

Connect my own SiP phone and things just sound jittery, why, cos I am running a phone that has not been fully tested on the Vox network? What Vox network... that's like saying what Skype Network?

If you try to bypass what Vox has set the solution for... and it doesn't work... then you can't turn around to Vox and blame them...

Lastly... the R49 a month rental is to cover the line rental... what line? The 087 trunking to the rest of the Telecommunications infrastructure... DAAAAH!

schurtek:

I agree fully with the points you are making in regards to the typical user - the fact is people just want it to work out of the box. If the typical user wants to make a phonecall then they want it to work 99.95% of the time

I feel that information in this thread is only really meant for people who know what they want and what they are doing.

So yeah, if you do this, you are probably a) breaching your contract and b) losing any recourse you might have to vox

But then again I just signed up so I would have a new toy to play with! More fun for me!

PS. I do make use of the vox 087 number, but only incoming as there are cheaper outbound solutions.

2 VOX ADSL phones on same line - possible or not?

I'm interested to know if it is at all possible to have two Vox units connected on a single ADSL line.

Reason: I have use for an additional VoIP trunk.

Note: Vox only assigns a single 087-number to each main node, so even if the unit can WDS with four other Vox handsets simultaneously, the system can only process one VoIP call at a time - not ideal for an office environment even if it's a small office.

How about some sort of bridging?

I was explained that if you have four phones you can have four calls connected on one number, as long as the upstream will allow.

VOX lines on FreePBX

Has anyone been successful in adding the VOX ADSL phone line on their softpbx?

I can get the SIP to register but no calls either way.

ANY AND ALL help will be appreciated

Multiple Numbers

Code:
5 x adsl phones, running on 1 x adsl line at R300 each, R49 pm each

That is what I received from VOX when I enquired about only getting 087 numbers from them. Now he also send a brochure where it states that each handset get it's own number.

If anyone wants this image let me know and I will forward it.

Vox has reasons! (Even though they won't tell)

After using Vox for a few months, I completely understand their ADSL-only policy.

Nobody likes choppy- poor quality voice calls. With ADSL these are almost non existent. But as soon as you have wireless somewhere in the equation, you degrade the service.

So the only really viable reason to want to do this, is if you, say, stay in a hostel or work for a big company, and have an ethernet socket in your room - and don't feel like paying the R400-odd extra monthly that a phone line with ADSL will imply.

- Or if you have really really good Wireless, with QoS, and know how to configure it.

On another note, I have not tried out any other firmwares. What are they like? What features do you get, that you don't get with the Vox standard firmware, once you have root access?

PS I have started putting together a step-by-step guide with screenshots - on how to use other types of connections apart from ADSL, on the Vox cradle. I'm about half-way... ;)

I have actually been playing now with my Vox setup... you can make two calls per ADSL line... that's using one 087 number... a third call can be done through the Telkom Line...

The amount of calls per 087* number is regulated in the soft switch; thus VOX determines how many calls can be made from a device.
If youre using a VoIP Gateway and Codec G729 you should have a call running at about 25k; thus you would be able to make 4 calls (with reasonable voice quality) on an adsl...

True, however in many areas, I've seen the uplink at no more than 64K... and it's for this reason that Vox are limiting the calls to 2 per line.
