the real reason I am so upset about RR is because as a protea supporter I feel I lost something of an investment.

wiht Abbot we can all see why he left and 100% agree with the reasons. at 30, knowing you will be on the sidelines if Stein and Morkel AND Philander are all fit is a terrible thing.
Abbot did the logical thing.

RR on the other hand.
he has had plenty of game time, we stuck by him when he got 5 ducks in a row. we have all beein saying RR should be in the team ahead of JP, or Berhardien, or countless other players.
when they moved him to open wiht QDK it really felt like he found form.
his last 5 ODI's were magnificent. 2 50's and a 100 against Austrailia.

sure we can Argue that if QDK, Hash, AB, Faf, JP, Berhardien and Miller are all fit it will be difficuilt to find space in the team, but we all know he is better than at least 3 of them, and had the favour of the selectors(unlike Abbot)

RR leaving hurts Cricket South Africa, becasue he was a non quota player that was given time, that could have been used to develop a quota player to be on the same standard.

I have heard that he left mostly because of Domingo and how he does things. He never knew when or whether he was playing, often only hearing the night before. Also been in the test squad for more than 2 years without a single game. One would think as per Domingo's response about Rilee, that if he really thought RR is the potential next AB that he would have communicated that to him so that he knew he had a future as a perm player in the team. Also given him him a test run instead of having him as 12/13man for two years and call up extra batsman when he is already in the squad (as happened in Aus).

As with Abbott, he also only recently had a solid run against Aus, so also started shopping around long before that.

Stiaan v Z the same issue, just the other way around with ODI vs Tests. He had the added problem of having to sit out now and then for his Franchise to make way for quotas in the shorter format especially when Levi plays.

Whether wrong or right is not the issue but it is perfectly understandable to then choose a more certain route that is also financially solid.

Does this not maybe point to an issue with the way we are developing our players? I have no suggestion on how to change it though...
 
On another note, I think Faf did well to keep the guys focused on the task at hand here.

Quite an irresponsible and stupid response by Domingo, if true, telling someone he can potentially fill the boots of one of the greatest players of all time, when everyone knows it isn't true.

That boat has sailed especially when we know Miller is more likely to be that player.

Domingo would have no right making such promises anyway. His tenure is only temporary and the next coach could have come along and preferred different.

Miller is no test player so he won't fill that void. He won't abandon the proteas thought like RR and Abbot. His ipl contract means he has no need for a county deal, same applies to morris.

People always talk about the pecking order and waiting your turn, and if this is the case then Abbott should have been the rightful replacement for Morkel because he was there first, whereas Rabada has plenty of time on his side, and could have played the role of the standby player for a couple of years.

Now I'm not saying it's right or wrong (I prefer Rabada anyway), but if this is his thought process then I can completely understand where he's coming from. It's not so much the money (he even said that it is not far off what he would have earned from CSA), but the insecurity...

Abbot's 9 wickets came in a dead rubber as an injury replacement. He should have gotten more chances but there was nothing unfair with the injury player coming back and getting his spot.

KG jumping the que is no different to steyn,ab and qdk doing the same. That happens with special talent. KG will be an all time great, he is the reason for our one and only cricketing world cup win.

"If that had been a player of colour, everyone would have said transformation. I haven't spoken to him since Australia but I am very disappointed." Rossouw had made four ducks in his first six ODI innings.
 
just a small side note RR made all those ducks playing in the wrong spot.
he should have always been an opener.
 
I understand why both did it, and I would have done the same, probably. But the way Rossouw did it was totally unacceptable.

Also, agree that Domingo seems a bit of a child moaning about the single L thing. That was neither here nor there, some people just spell **** - and it's not Rossouw's fault he has a redundant L in his name.

But I have nothing but respect for Abbot(t), and if you ask me, he has done exactly nothing wrong. The only controversy surrounding him, is that an unreliable source leaked the info early, and that's not Abbott's fault whatsoever.

Yes players have shaky starts but if the side sticks with you after that then you should repay that loyalty. Not like what RR has done. He has had lots of injuries and some horrendous brainfarts while batting. The Proteas deserved more loyalty then what he has shown...

It is a nasty question I know, but will loyalty feed the kids? I think they went for the safer options.
 
Good riddance!!

Any player that is willing to give up playing International cricket to play for a ****ing county side can get stuffed, especially Rossouw. Russel made a good point about his horrendous start in International cricket, 4 ducks in 6 innings. Almost any international side would have dropped him permanently but we stuck with him. Imagine if that was a black player?

They will look back in a few years time and have nothing but regret.
 
Also fringe players rely a lot on Franchise cricket because that is all they have fall back to, and that is where the real quota pressure is. Squads are getting rediculously large just to meet quotas, and players are rotated to meet those targets. Especially apparent this season, where teams like Cobras field 5 no-names every game. Someone had to sit out for them and everyone needs a chance. One change (giving one guy a spot) often means having to make two or three changes just to meet quota targets and still have a bat/bowl balance.

The fringe proteas being fringe players in the first place is also due to this. The pressure of rewarding talent as well as meeting quotas result in too many players being called up and then staying along for the ride rotating and sitting out. At the end of the day they would be better off just playing Franchise and playing actual cricket more often.

Another way of getting around this and trying to make it work by giving everyone a go is to label them either test/ODI/T20 players (RR vs SvZ) and Bavuma. Hard to find form in any of those labeled formats if you play only in those and have to sit out in the other formats.
