If they are as good as we feel they are they should be able to get ipl and cpl contracts and that will feed the kids more then a county deal...Plus it keeps you eligible for international cricket.

As one guy said on another while SA is playing Eng at Lords next summer in front of a full house Ab£ott will be playing at the Rose bowl in front of one man and his dog...

I agree to some extent, BUT I think Abbott's admission that he has been feeling vulnerable puts things into perspective... No one wants to live/work with a sword hanging over your head, even if its an imaginary one.

There is always sword hanging over your head in professional sport except if you are the top of the top super stars. If he wanted job security he should have picked a different profession.

I disagree, he has his job security now... not as glamorous, but hey the "different career" could have been packing bags at PnP

Russel made a good point about his horrendous start in International cricket, 4 ducks in 6 innings. Almost any international side would have dropped him permanently but we stuck with him. Imagine if that was a black player?

Who are you to judge a player's personal choices?

And you can't get UK citizenship playing in the IPL. Even if he's playing in front of empty stadiums, the money's good, his spot is secure and most likely his future. He is clearly thinking long term - i.e. after retirement. If he's a UK citizen, he can stay there and look for jobs even if not in cricket.

I know I'd 100 times rather want to be able to do that in the UK than in India.

Abbot did the logical thing.

RR on the other hand.
he has had plenty of game time, we stuck by him when he got 5 ducks in a row. we have all beein saying RR should be in the team ahead of JP, or Berhardien, or countless other players.
when they moved him to open wiht QDK it really felt like he found form.
his last 5 ODI's were magnificent. 2 50's and a 100 against Austrailia.

sure we can Argue that if QDK, Hash, AB, Faf, JP, Berhardien and Miller are all fit it will be difficuilt to find space in the team, but we all know he is better than at least 3 of them, and had the favour of the selectors(unlike Abbot)

RR leaving hurts Cricket South Africa, becasue he was a non quota player that was given time, that could have been used to develop a quota player to be on the same standard.

All good points until you look at the quotas. SA can only field 5 white players on the team. It's tough enough being in the top 11 players in the country but when you are forced to compete for 5 places as a batsmen you are in for a tough time. AB, Faf, De Kock and Steyn are guaranteed places. That leaves all of the other white players competing for 1 place. Tell me again how he had any guarantees.

Stein is too old. after all the injuries he will not have the pace, he needs to retire from ODI and T20 now, play only tests, break Poly's record and see how high up in the table he can go.

we havea KG as a paceman, and I am sure there is another person who can step up to deliver....

Then you are talking about 2 places for white players.

And people are being naive if they think he really means quotas didn't play a role. Of course it did, but if he were to mention it, he would be labelled a racist by the entire non-white community. He was just using his brain there.

and what 2 players would fill those spots best based on the requirement? RR or Abbot. depending on if we need more batting power or more bowling power in the given ODI.

so basically Stein not retiring is what chased them away.

That's my whole point. You have a few players who are guaranteed places and the rest have to compete for 1 or 2. Even if Steyn retires then there is likely to be another player who comes along and gobbles up one of the places. Domingo is complaining about RR but how can he offer any security to both players when they are competing for 1 or 2 places. The quota system is broken and it's a band aid for what they should be doing which is investing in grass roots. They are rushing players of colour through the system to fill some imaginary number and in the process damaging players like RR and Abbott and also the very player that they are rushing through. Very few players have the head to make it under that pressure so they end up failing.
