The gap was created by those in midtier chosing kolpak deals instead of waiting their time. So what happened when most of the great smith team retired is we were left with youngsters to take the spots instead of the midtier.

Players like amla,jp and faf holding on for too long imo. We also had a few kolpak players that would have more caps and bowling would be more settled ( olivier and abbott for example ). I love faf, but he had a really bad few test matches before this one.

In times of rebuilding you need your senior batsman to carry the team. In this side that is qdk,faf,elgar and bavuma. Unfortunately only qdk has performed consistently for the last 2 years.

All Kolpak registrations have been cancelled following the end of the United Kingdom's transition period with the European Union, but an increase in the number of overseas players permitted per team in the County Championship and the Royal London Cup means that several Kolpak players, including Abbott, have simply moved to overseas status. Abbott signed a contract extension with Hampshire in September 2019 which will see him stay at the club until the end of 2022.

The end of the Kolpak era also means that those playing county cricket as overseas players are eligible to represent South Africa again.

Australia has pulled out of their SA tour citing Coronavirus fears. From supersport.com

Australia pulled out of their test cricket tour to South Africa Tuesday due to the "unacceptable" risk to players with the coronavirus rampant in the country. Justin Langer's men were due to play three tests against the Proteas, and Australia named their squad last week with the intent to fly out this month. But the situation became untenable with the outbreak in South Africa accelerated by a new variant said to be more contagious than earlier strains of the virus. With almost 1.5 million detected infections and more than 44 000 fatalities, it has the highest number of cases and deaths on the continent.

Cricket Australia interim chief Nick Hockley said the medical advice was not to travel. "It has become clear that travelling from Australia to South Africa at this current time poses an unacceptable level of health and safety risk to our players, support staff and the community," he said. "This decision has not been made lightly and we are extremely disappointed, especially given the importance of continuing international cricket at this time.

"However, we have been consistent since the start of the pandemic that the health and safety of our people is always our No 1 priority and unfortunately despite best efforts to agree a biosecurity plan, the risks are simply too great at this time."
South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday said the country had "passed the peak" of its second coronavirus infection wave, but the virus remains a major problem.

I'd have thought that we got the SL tour right, and this would be motivation that we had finally found the sweet spot with cricket tours.

Probably more to do with them losing against India, and needing to practice so they're not thrashed in India :p

So, we have 1.4 million cases, India is closing in on 11 million. We have 44000 deaths, they have 154500 deaths, we have 105000 active cases with 546 serious/critical, India has 164000 active cases with 8900 serious/critical.

But they canned our tour and will continue with India's tour. Nice. India hasn't even had their second surge either so that's still coming. Sounds like a bit of a silly reason, especially since we pulled off the SL tour with no issues.

That stat has not changed in 8 months or more. But the sentiment of your note is understood.

The Aussies are thin-skinned and highly prone to all manner of sickness. Just a slight change in wind direction could strike the whole travelling party with multiple terminal illnesses.

Ah heck! Maybe it is for the best. It would have required a monumental effort and change of fortune to make a reasonable dent in their armour. What need though is a replacement tour. Maybe the Afghans and Zimbabweans might be interested.

Well, at least this way the Aussies don't go to the test championships. No sense sense in giving a cheat like Warner a shot at an extra accolade.

Not recent, last year. 1 Player tested positive which is less players then on your current sri lanka tour. Why haven't you come running home this time?? Oh yeah that's right there is the lucrative India tour which forms part of the asia tour and abandoning the Sri Lanka tour would jeopardize it.

chris woakes, moeen ali and hotel staff testing positive in sri lanka but its all fine to continue...

No player has tested positive during either the sri lanka mens tour or the Pakistan ladies SA ladies tour.
