The R36S retro gaming handheld thread

These cheapies are okay....got one my self last year....added gameboy color and gameboy roms....and some CPS1, and mame.... Does a pretty decent job....but the buttons aren't as responsive as it should be and not ideal for certain games with lots of button combos....But for a quick session have zero complaints....

At that price point I would rather get a half decent controller and pair it with a mid range phone, should achieve similar results. Of course not as sturdy but better all round use.

Does it run MAME?

I want to play Pengo on the go

Edit: I see answered on 2nd page.

Now if someone here can attest that it runs MAME based on personal experience I'll be in

R1598 - the price it shows currently for the purple one.

edit: Only getting delivered the 18th, apparently, so we're still waiting at this point.
Yikes, okay that's not too bad either. Remember to replace that microSD card asap too

Yeah we'll do that, problem is just the other day I bought 3 brand spanking new SD cards for something else, but they're Sandisk, which I see is not supported. Guess I'll have to get some Samsungs

Yeah no.....If I really need to I can use my tablet, it has enough horse power....but if I am going to get a controller might as well just go for an android box and get it over and done with.

The purpose is handheld and portable.......kinda defeats the purpose if you have to carry around a controller portability goes out the window.....it may be an option for you I am a no hassle, no fuss guy.......if there is a and, and, and then I am not interested

It isn't priced badly at all.....you get what you pay for....

Yeah I hear you man, ease of convenience, not having to lug extra stuff around. I meant i already have a phone so if im carrying a controller vs a whole other device, is more or less the same to me xD. I also found the bigger the device (Switch/SteamDeck/RogAlly) the less likely I was to grab it on the go. So the R36S, for what it is and the price I paid, I'm happy to throw it in my pocket and not really stress about it too much

Grabbed a little carry case off Takealot:

Fits perfectly, very snug.

Pretty much enough space for the console / some earphones and a memory card or two.

Well considering the size of phones these days, it isn't much larger. I have a nearly 7 inch phone,

Anbernic RG556 is 5.5 inches and has a amoled screen at 2k res. Honestly this kicks the switch oled in the teeth and pisses all over it for more than half the price and without any need to bypass/jailbreaking the switch. Considering the switch emulation is pretty decent..... Switch oled R9000.00 on takealot.......shipping/customs the Anbernic RG556 is just over 4k is you choose the 128gig option..

Size wise it
Anbernic RG556
Dimensions: 198 x 85 x 20 mm

Samsung S24
147 x 70.6 x 7.6 mm

Rg556 is only ever so slightly larger than the S24......personally size really isn't a argument....

Sandisk is supported - just only as slot 1 (which is OS but can also be games).

Slot 2 they don't work (them Samsungs on the other hand work in either slot).

Hosting games on slot 1 (while possible) isn't ideal - as if you need to wipe the card / upgrade the OS you jeopardise your ROMS, whereas keeping the games on slot 2 means you can nuke slot 1 with impunity.

Meh, but you can play PS2 games, xbox360 games, Halflife 2, Switch games on a proper cell phone, with a bluetooth controller and screen connector.

What if you have an improper cellphone?
