The R750 tablet computer

The nonprofit organization that has tried to produce a $100 laptop for children in the world's poorest places is throwing in the towel on that idea -- and jumping on the tablet bandwagon.

The new tablets will have at least one, and maybe two, video cameras. They'll sport Wi-Fi connections to the Internet, "multi-touch" screens and have enough power to play high-definition and 3-D video.

Why?

For something that's designed to go out to seriously poverty-stricken areas, what's the use of two video cameras, wi-fi, a multi-touch screen and HD video.

If they want all that I seriously doubt they're going to keep it under $100. Not only that, but does a device like this even need HD video or multi-touch?

Also, there was no mention of the battery, which is often one of the most expensive parts of something like this, and if it's going to have all the power the makers intend - it's going to need a serious battery.

Is it also going to be more hardy than a laptop? I think it might just be... although I don't even want to go into what sand will do that thing.

I'm skeptical... but probably only because of what OLPC taught us.

Good for them, but I will only believe it when I see it. They will need serious funding from somewhere to do it at that price with all those features

They're onto their 3rd generation of OLPC's but not once did they attain their goal of a $100 PC. They should focus on that first.

The two cameras is silly.
The wifi is vital.

This is a good initiative, and something I firmly believe in. Education is vitally important in today's world.

And it is not about being able to afford it - it is also about making it cheap enough for other people / organizations to be able to sponsor it.

Training is essential to progress and if they can drop a training video or two on any subject from farming to cooking to solar then it will already be worth it. Else these people will not move move beyond subsistence farming. Pass along the knowledge!

Unlike Apple Inc.'s iPad tablet, the device will also work with plug-in peripherals such as mice.
Come on! Even as an apple hater that is an unfair stab at them. Everyone knows iPads are just for looking good and showing off - connecting peripherals to it will make it unpretty and useful.

You can connect a keyboard and mouse. http://www.redmondpie.com/control-ipad-with-magic-mouse-9140743/
But what's the point of a mouse, then you can't use it anywhere? That's the point of the iPad.
iPad is plenty useful, you can connect cameras and it has VGA out. There's still nothing with it's battery life that weighs 800g

so where can I get one... this is a great initiative- im soooooo glad that they wont be using windows, this will be fantastic for linux if they decide to rather go that route.

Roux-tjie, I think you have some deep psychological problems, and need to see a psychiatrist. I think when you were a young boy, the bigger boys in your neighborhood used to bully you, and throw apples at you. You now have a deep rooted fear and hatred for anything Apple.....without even seeing and experiencing it's merits , you lash out at them. We understand Roux-tjie....and sympathise with your hysteria.
