ok forget all these ping/download/speed/trace tests that all the pros do. i did the simple man in the street test yesterday. left work in randburg, laptop on the passenger seat (with its seatbelt on), tuned into highveld stereo streaming, and rode all the way home to ruimsig listening to highveld on my pc. only once did i lose signal and did it jump to gprs and that was by the squatter camp at the top of beyers naude... otherwise i didnt have any break in the streaming at all.... i must have base hopped like 4 or more towers seamlessly.

(and to think i couldnt even stream on sentech without moving....)

I think with Vodacom's rollout plans you won't be able to beat the coverage in a few months time. All the other current players are only concentrating on set areas. I think the 3G option will be great for overall coverage.

I joined the "real" test bandwagon, and drove from Wilgeheuwel (West Rand) along Hendrik Potgieter, turned into Ontdekkers/Main, travelled along past Sophiatown SAPS and Metro HQ, left into I am not sure the name, passed Helen Joseph and back of Melville, left into Empire road, along to Parktown (near Park Lane Clinic), my results were :

Had Highveld streaming from my doorstep (study actually) all the way until Sophiatown SAPS, lost stream for about a minute, picked up near Helen Joseph, signal again, lost by Jan Smuts/Empire, picked up VERY shortly afterwards, and signal all the way to the clients desk in Parktown.

P.S. Speeds averaging from 60 to 130km/h, mostly around 90km/h..... Now tell me thats not mobile connectivity.

I listened to highveld in my car all morning without connecting to the internet !:D

Seriously tho, try streaming international radio - maybe Groove Salad via winamp - now that would be a true test !

ajax, thanks for the subtle reminder :)

Will follow up again. When last did you test on GPRS?

I have not tested since I last contacted you on this. I borrowed a phone from a friend to test. I will ask him again.

I've put my venture into 3G/GPRS on hold till this works.

Ajax & V3G, being a Durban boy I decided to set my card to use GPRS and do some testing.

My result :
ECR streams 100% on GPRS on my location :)
3.3MB file from smtp.vodacom.co.za downloaded at 4.48Kbytes/sec = 35.84kbits/sec

I'll check as well.

The ECR problem was quite strange as it uses two different servers for GPRS and 3G. We could stream across 3G but not across GPRS.

Did a trace on the GPRS connection and it just never started. Nothing in the data stream could explain this, thus we were still trying to figure it out.

I hope it was not a case (actually, I do hope it was) of the streaming server being down for some reason.....

Highly unlikely, I remember distinctly connecting on dialup right after my GPRS tests and it worked first time. Is it maybe that Harley79 is in Durban? Maybe somewhere along the line a router or something to Cape Town is set to block p2p?

Vodacom3g, please retest, but first check if it works on 3G or dialup. I'm quite keen to hear the result!

It has been down since 6am! Any news on the cause or when it will be up?

Lots of people running around like crazy...

3G was also affected but that's back up.

Can't get a time yet, but no one is going to slow down till it's up.

JHB is fine.
