On the morning of the 24th of December, whilst returning from Die Boord Spar,
I came across an elderly gentleman, dressed to perfection in his very best, slowly making his painful way across the road I was about to turn into, with his crutch, I guess he's close to seventy years of age.
I stopped and asked him if I could help.
This is what he told me:
That he is a gardener/handyman for a family here in Paradyskloof ( an upmarket leafy suburb on the slopes of Stellenbosch mountain), his employers had offered to take him to the doctor that morning (as he was in quite a bit of pain).
After making his way by foot (this gentleman is cripple), then taxi, then train, then taxi, then foot all the way to our suburb, he arrived at a locked up home, the family had gone away for Christmas.
I found him walking back to the highway, where he was hoping to hail a taxi.
I gave the gentleman a lift back to Stellenbosch and dropped him at the taxiranks there and gave him R50 (which he did not ask for), to compensate him for the monies he had obviousely spent in order to get to Stellenbosch from Klapmuts in the first place.
The above incident would have remained a private incident between me and the gentleman, if I had not been approached by our neighbours hungry cat, who came running towards me, even though I was walking with my dog.
The neighbours have been away for over a week already, and the fact that the cat approached me, with a husky on leash, immediately alerted me to the fact that the cat was hungry.
So I went and fed the cat.
I am angry that those who have comfortable lives and take so much for granted, can be so unaware of the plight of those around them.
Please people, most of us online, have much more than the majority of people around us, regardless of the fact the we have worked hard for it,
kindness is a civil attitude and does not cost us much.
Please spare a thought for the poor, sick and destitude, kindness is a worthy and very civil trait and it disgusts me to see the thoughtless cruelty of supposedly educated and civil people around me.
I am ashamed.
