On the morning of the 24th of December, whilst returning from Die Boord Spar,
I came across an elderly gentleman, dressed to perfection in his very best, slowly making his painful way across the road I was about to turn into, with his crutch, I guess he's close to seventy years of age.

I stopped and asked him if I could help.

This is what he told me:

That he is a gardener/handyman for a family here in Paradyskloof ( an upmarket leafy suburb on the slopes of Stellenbosch mountain), his employers had offered to take him to the doctor that morning (as he was in quite a bit of pain).

After making his way by foot (this gentleman is cripple), then taxi, then train, then taxi, then foot all the way to our suburb, he arrived at a locked up home, the family had gone away for Christmas.

I found him walking back to the highway, where he was hoping to hail a taxi.

I gave the gentleman a lift back to Stellenbosch and dropped him at the taxiranks there and gave him R50 (which he did not ask for), to compensate him for the monies he had obviousely spent in order to get to Stellenbosch from Klapmuts in the first place.

The above incident would have remained a private incident between me and the gentleman, if I had not been approached by our neighbours hungry cat, who came running towards me, even though I was walking with my dog.

The neighbours have been away for over a week already, and the fact that the cat approached me, with a husky on leash, immediately alerted me to the fact that the cat was hungry.

So I went and fed the cat.

I am angry that those who have comfortable lives and take so much for granted, can be so unaware of the plight of those around them.

Please people, most of us online, have much more than the majority of people around us, regardless of the fact the we have worked hard for it,
kindness is a civil attitude and does not cost us much.

Please spare a thought for the poor, sick and destitude, kindness is a worthy and very civil trait and it disgusts me to see the thoughtless cruelty of supposedly educated and civil people around me.

I am ashamed.

Ok, the first incident is not cool at all, but there is a possibility that there was a simple misunderstanding in terms of the day that they said they would take him to the doctor.

The cat one though, thats just not acceptable. If you have pets and are going away, you make a plan to get your pets fed and looked after.

I always feel angry when most people say "No" to the "Funny Money" vendors at the traffic lights. Obviously there are some intrusive ones, but the one I know at the traffic lights is very cheerful :) ...I can't believe some people are so selfish as to never give these people R2-R5 every two weeks (that's how often it comes out I think) yet they drive very flashy cars. Of course it's one right to refuse it if one doesn't like the Funny Money pamphlet, but the amount of people just saying "NO" is shocking.

Hey Chris, do you give money to every single person begging or vendor at the robot? probably not, well how do you know the person in the car next to you didnt buy this pamphlet or give R10 to guy at the robot 2 blocks before?

Just because people arent buying those pamphlets infront of you doesnt meant they aren't buying them at all, dont be so quick to judge everyone

So after you buy the new funny money when it comes out you buy it again when the oke at the next robot asks?

No. I only go past one intersection which has funny money vendors. But yes, when I do happen to go past other robots when there are other vendors, I wouldn't buy it again.

@Nivek: Of course that is a possibility, but 95% of the time when I've been there [at this particular robot] no-one else gives him money. And sometimes I go past this particular intersection 3 or 4 times a day. It's also their attitude that I find deplorable. The people in the cars don't even look at the vendor, they close their windows when the vendor comes along as if they are going to be hi-jacked etc. Have the courtesy to say 'No' if you already have one.

Agreed, these AIDS orphans may have a bright future; however, these beggars and alike are merely a burden on society. If we don't start building this country up from the ground (being the children, including these orphans) this problem will never go away.

What you're doing may not solve the problem today (give a man a fish) but will hopefully contribute somewhat to eliminating the problem in the future (teach a man to fish).

A few things..

1- "Funny Money" thing is a bit annoying because i'm never interested in it. I know the whole point of it was to provide a way of not begging but begging at the robots(i don't see it as an improvement sorry). Its kinda ironic when you look at the business that prints it but i guess every company needs a way to feel better.

2- Assuming you know all the facts then yes, it does suck. Sometmes i get annoyed with family for things where they inconsiderate too though not as bad as this.. ugh, i dunno old people refuse to change.i don't get how they can leave their cat to fend for itself either.

@wrathex - nice one, this is what the Christmas spirit is about.

/and NO, I do not support the robot beggars. Ever.

Kudos wrathex

As for the intersections...If I had to buy every single thing thrust through my window...lame joke sheets, cellphone chargers, black bags, beadworks, paintings, coathangers, Big Issue Magazines...always something at every intersection, I'd be broke. Sorry. I can't save the world.

If I stood on my flat balcony for an hour and helped everyone who asked, I'd have 8 garden boys, 10 maids, no food, no money, no furniture and I'd probably be dead.

Bugger the peasants, let them eat cake

Being selfish, self-absorbed, self-interested and generally greedy are very useful characteristics if you want to be rich.

I had a multi-millionaire boss who use to tell me with relish how he would scheme and cheat to save the pennies. He had worked out how to delay paying rates for months on his Hermanus mansion just to save the interest. He would pack his dirty laundry when he went on a business trip and then have the hotel do his washing. He would get his PA to find out if another staff member was going to the airport so he didn't have to use his own car or pay the airport parking and he never gave lifts in his Merc. He shared these and many more pearls of wisdom without realizing what a sad excuse for a human he had become.

I know a wealthy lawyer who when he is invited to a braai or party, will ask the host to use the phone for an urgent call he has just remembered about. Then he just calls up his friends for a chat rather than use his own phone at home.

Another guy won't talk to his friends on the phone because it takes too long and his time is too valuable. He gently encourages everyone to SMS him rather.

A friend's sister-in-law is a fancy lawyer and her time is too precious to do any shopping or errands at all. She has employed a 20-something slave-girl for R3500 a month to do all the babysitting, shopping and errands. She has clothes brought to her office so she doesn't have to waste time in a shop with the rest of us peasants.

With attitudes like these you are halfway to making your first million. You won't be happy but you will be rich.

Im one of those people that closes the window 25m before a robot, I dont know what its like in CPT, but here in JHB 'no' doesnt get you very far, if your window is open they will spend every available second to get you to buy those fake oakleys or dvds, im sorry but if it were to happen once a day its ok, but over here it happens at every single intersection

The poor can go ask the government that they elected into power for charity. I hand over enough in taxes to pay 6 social grants and what do I get in return: nothing, absolutely nothing. 40% of my income goes to paying corrupt bureaucrats (which I didn't elect), 14% to VAT, more to fuel and other levies, several percent to "redistribution" levies, after which I have to pay for my own schooling, security and healthcare, and now you still expect me to support the poor. I only use 20% of what I worked damn hard to earn, the fat incompotent polititions taking the other 80% can support the poor. I refuse.

Yup.

Well we do get an upgrade on our roads - hope it is all done when I get back to Gauteng

I say no to all of them.

Dear wrathex, I thought your OP was very well written.

When I read the title I immediately assumed that it is another "rich people should give their stuff to the poor" thread, but i was clearly mistaken. If you have committed to do something for someone, especially knowing the circumstances they find themselves in, you need to follow through.

However, from there onwards the thread went downhill fast, which is a pity.
