The wait for the RWC back on SA shores continues. Australia confirmed as 2027 hosts (mens) and the USA for the 2031 edition (also mens). England will host the women's edition in 2025 and Australia in 2029.

Well we hosted in 1995, 27 years ago, so we can't really complain.

At any rate who knows what will be left of Afriq de Sud by mid 2030s at this rate, never mind the Springboks as a team.

I mean I haven't really followed the politics around this but what's up with this?
I mean is there a bidding process like the soccer?

Haha, touche.

I do think our rugby will always be strong. The relaxing of the rule that said that overseas based players were not eligible to represent the Boks has made a big difference. Sure, I think it has diluted the local comps with so many big players plying their trade overseas but if it means we have a strong national side then it's all good. I also believe that the quota issue is now a non event as we have so many black players of merit playing.

Part of me believes that world rugby (especially the home unions) still has it in for South Africa as a rugby nation. Whether it is because of our physicality (read, bully-boys) or 'boring' style of play, they don't like to see us do well and so they do what they can to neuter our chances of lifting rugby's most treasured trophy. Crime and corruption are used as convenient scape-goats or reasons to not award us the tournament but the reality is we have some of the best stadia, training facilities, fans and climate in the world, not to mention the exchange rate is favourable to touring supporters.

....

To be honest, besides my teenage memories, the natural beauty of this land in all its forms and the Springboks there's not much else I am proud of being called a Saffer these days....

Sad truth. But reality.

Well, Australia co-hosted with NZ in 1987, again in 2003, that's a 16 year gap. The home Nations have had it 2 or 3 times since then as well.

France getting their second shot at it. 16 years after 2007.

2035 will go to the home unions again because by then it will have been 20 years (2015) since England last hosted it.

Our best bet is 2039, 44 years after 1995.

A big thank you for catapaulting rugby into the future.

We have not bid since the corruption that lead France to the 2023 RWC hosts. SARU came out at the time after 3 unsuccessdul bids and after independent reviews suggested we should host 2023 that they may probably never bid again.

We'll all be at work for 2027 and all asleep during 2031.

Those of us that still have jobs in SA anyway.

Lol the stadium lights goes off...

Eskom loadshedding sigh.

People were saying that in the early 90s too, yet here we are. RWC champs to boot.
Yes, 3 times world champions but from the perspective of hosting the tournament that means naught.

Fiji are 7's world champs but will likely never host a tournament. Simply don't have the infrastructure.

SA has lot's going for it as a potential host, world class stadiums, pristine beaches, fantastic weather, favorable exchange rate, hotels and cuisine to rival the best in the world, game parks, a fanatical fanbase with a rich rugby heritage... I won't go into the cons though, suffice to say most of the hosting nations don't face the socio political challenges we do.

We were almost guaranteed 2023 but then France joined the party late and promised more money.

The Irish are just as upset about it as they felt they had a decent chance as well.

Our govt backed all 3 successive bids we made.

Racing 92 out.

La Rochelle through to the final to meet Leinster.

Well done to La Rochelle. Horrible game though... Never got out of 1st gear. Hard to enjoy.

It was like both sides weren't too keen to win and who can blame them with the form Leinster are in.

Caught the highlights of the Bulls / Lions Currie Cup match. While the way it ended was bizarre, my takeaway from it was the ref constantly dipping into his pocket to reach for his yellow card. Were they all justified or was the ref just being power hungry?

Big start to the weekend tomorrow.

Crucial URC matches for the SA sides to win.

Womens 7s
Mens 7s

Massive. Can't wait. We going to battle on those away fixtures. If we lucky bulls and stormers will pick up wins. Can't see sharks knocking over ulster or lions the dragons.

Yeah The Sharks one is concerning me a lot.

I hope the Womans 7s do some magic but they are against a strong Aussie 7s side....
