I thought to myself that luckily for every @cavedog and @skimread, who knows very little about rugby - just read their comments, we have level headed people like @Agent_Smith and @netstrider to balance them out.

But good god, what game were you watching. Willie is one of our best attackers in the squad, without him linking up in the backline there won't be near as much line breaks (if any). He creates gaps and overlaps better than anyone in South Africa, you don't have to like him to admit it.

Tell me, what did I say that shows I know very little about rugby? You can't. I know more than most. This is a discussion forum and your only contribution is that you have a crush on WIllie and think he plays in South Africa when he plays in Japan.

Glad Pollard is finding his kicking form because I really miss the days when we had 90%+ kickers at goal. Now only is he can some more distance on his line kicks.

For me the 1999 campaign was our best campaign to date and that includes the 3 we've won.

Undefeated in the pool stages, magnificent against a strong England in the quarters. Totally annihilated them. De Beer's remarkable drop kicking exhibition. Then pushed Australia (the eventual world cup winners) all the way to extra time (the irony of that match defining Larkham drop goal)!! Knocked over NZ for 3rd place! We did everything except win it...

The moment you **** on Nienaber and the current Bok gameplan which won us the Worldcup and BIL, all that knowledge you have went out the window. You seem to think that you know more than Nienaber, because unless you know more than him you have no other reason to say that he is a bad coach. So what if certain decisions doesn't work out, no coach out there can predict the future or if his players will pitch up on the day, everything is probabilities. Sometimes plans work out, sometimes it doesn't. The key is to reduce the risk, make the plans work out when it matters, which Nienaber did with the BIL.

He tends to blow hot and cold.

@cavedog from what I can gather, only recently started showing a greater interest in rugby. It can be a minefield to navigate with the convoluted laws and how they're interpreted by the match day referee. The laws are specific but their interpretation is ambiguous.

You twist what I said for your narrative. Nienaber is at fault for the loss as he chose the starting team and had to make drastic changes early because of his selection which took away our strength of the bomb squad.

Nienaber decided to select the two shortest forwards in the HISTORY of international rugby of ANY nation to play the All Blacks. That backfired so badly he had to pull both early in the first half.
Selected an unfit player in Vermeulen instead of starting Wiese or Roos. Had to pull Vermeulen early.
Selected the most overhyped player in Kriel who let a forward run past him on his outside while on the wing at the start of the game that resulted in us getting a yellow card, then his first tackle had such bad technique he got knocked out and our whole backline was disrupted the whole game.

Nienaber **** on the bok bomb squad game plan that won us the world cup by having to pull the forwards early.
The result is that in the last 10 minutes All Blacks got the better of us.
You claim in your above post I **** on the game plan that won on the world cup. I did the opposite.

Logic has escaped you.

I'm not sure height has anything to do with it. He didn't pick Dweba at lock. Height isn't a prerequisite for a front row forward. In fact shorter props with a lower centre of gravity sometimes out scrum much larger opponents. Dweba is not much shorter than James Dalton. And Dalton packed down alongside Os @ 1.9m

Duane clearly wasn't ready for such a big test. No arguments there. Maybe he should have come off the bench rather but the coaches and fitness staff would have been better placed to know, you'd think?

The game was lost in the first 30, having to play catchup till the 68th minute expended huge amounts of energy and effort.

Many reasons. A short hooker has to throw to a tall lock which is harder if you are the shortest hooker in the history of international rugby playing the All Blacks.

Watch the try that we scored in the 14 minute but was disallowed. If you are the shortest prop in the history of international rugby you can easily get stripped of the ball by a tall player.

I can't recall any of our other props being stripped of the ball so easily.

 
Apparently we missed more tackles in the first test, 25 v 24 in the 2nd.

You going to miss tackles when you have a team running everything at you.

The back line reshuffle certainly didn't help but I thought it did a lot for our flare on attack. DDA is never throwing a 35m pass to put Mapimpi in, in the corner. Even AM's first try, DDA was the dummy runner, Pollard playing with depth passed to Willemse, Willemse to Le Roux in a bit of space and Le Roux to AM. Caleb should have had him covered but the slippery f uck that AM is, he broke out of the tackle and the rest is history...

Yeah I remember that first half opportunity. Just can't recall the match situation at that stage. Were we already chasing the game?

Of course. Will Peter Dinklage be better at throwing lineouts to a 1 meter lock or 2 meter lock?

More importantly because he is so small Dwebe has to spend extra time in the gym to get massive arms to overcompensate for his small size. If you have that much muscle on your arms your throws will never be accurate.

Heck even look at a NFL quarterback. They have to throw the ball so much further. Often 50 meters. But because accuracy is so important they have slender arms and often look the least like an athlete. Same with baseball pitchers and cricket bowlers. Big muscles hinder throwing accuracy.

I think 1 was when it was 0-0 and the next one they had a lead think it was 10 - 0 by then.
 
better to lose like that and learn a few things than to have steamrolled them like everyone expected. I said all it takes is a week for NZ to go from vrot to dangerous

Its not all doom and gloom. Lots of things went wrong, the early kriel injury, resulting in a backline reshuffle (WOW is lukanyo Am just not pure quality?) bongi late withdrawal (Dwebas inexperience showed), duanne not being matchfit, the reffing was sub-par, etc.

but at the end of the day we actually had this game and lost it as opposed to the ABs beating us. despite all the helter skelter, we were in the lead with 12 mins to go. we should have closed it out tbh,
