Donkey Meneer, appreciate the concern.Wish we could be playing a test vs Zimbabwe at the moment instead. Even a once off against Namibia would do.

Didn't just beat them but absolutely pummelled them in the 2nd half. As good a 40 minutes as I've ever seen from a Borthwick coached touring England side.
Was actually a very entertaining game and for me the game of the day.
Let's be clear though, Argentina are also missing a whole clutch of players.
They're not far behind Australia when it comes to lack of depth.
They have no local pro competition to talk of so their entire professional network of players play exclusively abroad.
They're a nation where rugby is sustained purely by the love for the sport. Love doesn't pay the bills. Love alone won't sustain them or ensure their continued competitive edge.
Was actually a very entertaining game and for me the game of the day.

Two questions I'm pondering this fine winter's afternoon:
1. Does anyone realistically expect the Wallaby side who snuck a last gasp victory against Fiji to put up a fight against the Lions?
2. Who will take up the coaching role at Loftus - Nienaber, Ackermann, van Graan? Or someone else?

1.) Lions lost to Argentina, England hammered Argentina, in Argentina, over the weekend. Results are an indication of form but a new game, new opposition, scores are 0-0 and 80 minutes of battle will decide the outcome. On current form you would say the Aussies have little to no chance but sport is the great equaliser. Lions are hot favourites but no guarantees.
2.) I'd say Johan Ackermann is the most likely replacement but apparently he's committed to the Bok U20s so perhaps not. There was an article posted today stating Bulls are looking into Nienaber as an option. That would be amazing but unlikely. Van graan would be amazing but he's committed to 2030 and Bath are paying him bombs. Franco Smith's name has been bandied around as has Heyneke Meyers.

In fact there were a number of surprising results this weekend. Not necessarily upsets but none of the blow outs expected.
Wales were expected to beat Japan. Their woeful run continues and they've now lost 18 on the bounce.
NZ were expected to cruise against France B, yet they could only manage a 4 point victory.
Depleted Italy were expected to ship 40 plus, yet we scraped and ground our way to an 18 point victory.
Tahs lost by 11 where their contemporaries lost by 40 plus.
Argentina, at home, got smoked by 23 v an England side minus 10+ players on Lions duty.
The results were mostly predictable but the margin of defeat was certainly not.
No guarantees.

Bokke game was really k@k. We typically play the team in front of us, instead of just playing our game.
The worse the side we play, the worse we play lots of the time.
Two things:
That rolling maul try by Italy contained 2 blatant instances of banking/obstruction. Their player ( the captain) was clearly between us and the ball receiver in the line-out, when he came down and the maul started. And he stayed there all the way to the line. A try in the AB/France game was disallowed exactly because of that.
Also: The Italians AND the French seems to have a new "technique" at their own scrums. The ball is put in and the scrummie just shuffles 2 steps to his right and picks up the ball between the flanker's feet and the lock's leg at the side of the scrum and plays it.
Is that actually legal? It's obviously a great way of getting the ball out really fast and safely when you're battling a scrum like that of the Bokke or the AB's.

The disallowed try for oxs obstruction. Obstruction happens all the time in open play, only gets checked if it leads to a try. The ab had a try disallowed for the same reason. Every elaborate backline move contains elements of deception that borders on obstruction. That's the whole purpose.
Banking happens regularly at lineout time, in varying degrees, seldom blown or checked unless it leads to a try. I didn't see the Italians banking in their try. Will watch the game again at some stage.
In scrums as long as the ball goes backwards after the feed it can exit anywhere as long as the players are all bound. Only the 8 is allowed to detach and pick up the ball from the back of the scrum. The ball isn't allowed to exit through the mouth of the scrum IE where the 9s feed the ball into the scrum.

Poor game by the Boks on Saturday. Nice to score 6 tries when playing badly but this is not the standard we are used to.
To concede a maul try from an Italian B/C team was shocking.
And they outscored us 21-14 in the 2nd half.
Bomb squad was a damp squib.
Hope this is a wake-up call.

I'm surprised by all the negative analysis of the bok game. Aside from the few silly knock-ons we played really well. Italy having a solid game is not bok weakness.
And Italy really showed up. I hope this game motivate them for the second one and not that they gave it their all and got crushed. I want to see them be competitive. Because we did crush them.
Italy playing a young team who want to do well is better than their old well known players who are used to a culture of losing.

Yeah, it wasn't THAT bad. The first half was pretty good, the second half was disappointing.
Going through our team sheet it also wasn't a full strength squad. Lood hasn't played in a good while, Marco won't make a full strength 23, Tshituka was on debut,
Morné is brand new and Damian has also been out for an extended period.
I wonder what Justin Marshall thinks of that result...

You said you are surprised by all the negativity. Any Bok team should never struggle in the lineouts, mauls against a what was actually an Italian B/C team.
It's the first time we have won with so small a margin at home against them. We were outscored by them in the 2nd half. At home and altitude, it looked like the Boks were the ones that was on tour.
The Italians played out of their skins and well above par. Kudos to them. But the Boks were not good on Saturday, let's not fool ourselves.
