I think he is being slightly disingenuous though, there is a good reason provincial leaders publicly make their choices know, it's to whip their constituencies in line, otherwise they would just go there and vote for whoever they like without a need for a public announcement.

There has never been an upset in the DA leadership election, the people who are expected to win will always win, it's not going to be different this time, John and Zille are going to win, plus all those who are aligned to them.

One of the points I also disagree with him on is that DA wont win more than "25% just because John is white"

That feeds into the victimhood narrative people who believe that that is why the DA cant grow as much as they would have liked. Someone like Trollip was viewed far more fabourably among the black community than Steenhuisen. In other words, a white leader with high EQ can take them far.

I have seen white candidates also win in SRC elections by big margins in majority black campuses and if anything, the black and coloured voters are likely less likely than other groups to vote along racial/ethnic lines per capita.

More investment in the issue of rural safety in general would be good, since crime prevention is a big challenge there, not just in farms, but terming it like that would not appeal to their Freedom Front electorate, they want a special mention, to be removed from the general masses.

While the conference hall is still filling up, there appears to be an overwhelming support for incumbent party leader John Steenhuisen who is seeking a second term. Delegates are wearing badges bearing his face and I have seen a few posters. I am yet to see any posters in support of Mpho Palatase but her supporters could still be en route.

While the focus has been on the leader position, there are 25 candidates in the running for various national leadership positions.

Helen Zille is uncontested for the federal council chairperson position.

Candidates contesting for the three deputy chairpersons of federal council positions are:

- Annelie Lotriet

- Ashor Sarupen

- James Masango

- Lungile Phenyane

- Segope Sathekge

- Thomas Walters

- Tyrone Gray

Walters, Sarupen, and Lotriet are the favourites to emerge victorious.

DA National Spokespoerson, Solly Malatsi who is running for the position of Deputy Federal Chaiperson tell Qaanitah Hunter, News24’s Assistant editor: Politics and opinions that he believes the 17 years he has spent with in the DA and 10 years in Parliament have prepared his for the position he is contesting.He adds that he is supporting John Steenhuisen for the position of party leader as he has created policy certainty with in the DA.

Nothing wrong about DA racial dynamics, says deputy federal chairperson candidate Solly Malatsi
DA national spokesperson Solly Malatsi, who is running for the position of Deputy Federal Chairperson, has defended the party’s racial dynamics saying it is the nature of politics that individuals leave parties regardless of the colour of their skin.
Speaking to News24 shortly before the congress got underway on Saterday morning, Malatsi said: "Some people [black leaders] thrive on being the only ones who shining in an organisation, once the pool of talent grows then they become unsettled and leave."
He added that "the problem with the media is that it focuses on a black regional leader leaving and does not place prominence on a black female being appointed as the party’s chief whip in Parliament".
"There is just a narrow view of the DA from analysts and the media."
Malatsi said the party had learnt it's lesson after the departure of Mmusi Maimane and was now cautious of "building a party around a strong personality as this doesn't work."
He also threw his weight behind John Steenhuisen for the position of party leader as he has created policy certainty with in the DA.
