Because he doesn’t speak the language? Maybe he should hire Papas as an interpreter.

So he is willing to make an effort to speak Afrikaans (even though he doesent speak the language) and is not fluent as @PrimeSteak says but did not make an effort to learn Zulu when he spent most of his political life working for the DA structures in KZN.

What was he doing while in the DA structures in KZN? One would think the DA would be encouraging their leaders to speak Zulu there especially as it is something which could have helped them grow instead of wasting money on Phoenix posters.

Not sure why John never focused on just getting a qualification though as a backup incase politics fails? He has the funds and opportunity. Many others in politics have done studies while they were involved, even Malema did so.

Gouws perhaps had his own motives for making this statement. Phalatse would have been a really great choice as DA leader. She's done the work, understands where things need to go. Steenhuisen, through his lack of using his time, hasn't stamped out a clear vision, has shown a lack of character and yes, has made no effort to degree himself whatsoever - and these things matter. Degrees matter (besides what the tiktok/youtube gurus say).

I'm sure he picked up a little Afrikaans as a child. Learning a new language is not like clicking your fingers. If I was him, I would hire an interpreter. Just go back to your little corner of hate.

Gouws is a known race-baiter. Some within the DA have even said that he is a problem (on anonymity to the press). The DA most likely know this (hence he has never been promoted) but he does seem to be on good terms with Zille and Steenhuisen.

He tries in Afrikaans but not Zulu (the language of his hometown) or any other indigenous language. Why? As a senior politician in charge of a big party, he should be making an effort to connect with people as his former colleague Trollip did.

Malema speaks more languages than this guy.
100% agreed. How hard is to attend language classes and to learn?

So-called unskilled workers including domestic workers and even petrol attendents learn a new language all the time i.e English. What excuse is there for Steenhuisen especially as he is in a job where connecting with people is important?

Again, it's easy when you pick it up as a child.

False. It is more about immersion than anything. Plenty of people learn languages after moving to a new place as adults.

Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Zulu isin't even the hardest language to learn, it's not Chinese and he is a politican of a big party so should be scrutinized more than an ordinary person especially as his job involved connecting with people.

Agreed.
I still think back to how powerful this speech was, and sadly, in SA, this is unusual for a white person. It starts at schools where kids are forced to learn afrikaans still as a second language.

I see a studio has collapsed this morning, lol, Steenhuisen is now guilty of not speaking enough languages.

And to think the DA members chose Zille over this guy, unbelievable...
I agree with you. Unfortunately they had been laying his path for exit long before that. Let's see how he and Herman Mashaba fair with Action SA.

She did not win by a huge margin when she took on Trollip.

One thing I will give HZ for is that she is a smart and shrewd politician in her own way. She can be ruthless when she needs to. She modfied her political character at that time, adopting aspects of Trumpism which she had seen was appealing to the "core electorate".

The HZ of today is a totally different HZ of 2009 and 2014 who introduced BEE into DA party policy and who introduced racial targets into it.

If she did not modify her character for that one, Trollip would have beaten her.

I think she even dropped speaking Xhosa now to be more appealing to her priority target market.
