Interesting number, does need some unpacking in terms of what they mean by "as a direct result"... is that because the wars were happening or because the US and any of its attached entities actively killed that many people.

Their mass murdering nature shouldn't be a hindrance. It isn't for the hypocritical west, but you do need to make sure you are allied with people who will advance your country's interests. In the case of the ANC, it is their interests based on misguided historical leanings and the ANC's interests are always bad for this country's wellbeing.
