The SA Politics Thread Part 3

At least one consolation for Lesufi is ANC cadres are easy to bribe so they'll fold eventually. It does highlight the fact that the ANC will compromise their own members concerns to placate the EFF (a minority calling the shots over the majority) just to maintain "power" which is what we can expect when they go into coalition in 2024.
I don't understand the "compromise their own members part", They don't need to be bribed and are certainly not being compromised, they will do the right thing, as directed by their bosses, just as it happens with other parties, when the DA directs their councillors to vote for some Moonshot partner they do exactly that, same here with the ANC.

There's nothing untoward about it, the councillors, just like MPs represent their own parties and are there at the mercy of the parties, when they are told to do something they do it.

Looks like ActionSA is taking the bigger man approach and and wants to use that against the DA.

Seems councillors aren't happy with the Dark One's instructions aimed at appeasing the EFF. Lesufi is dangerous because he's actually a believer.
ANC councillors in Johannesburg collapsed the election of a new mayor after Lesufi pleaded with them to give in to the EFF's demands that a member of a minority party be elected as mayor of the country's richest city.

Yeah, they will come around, if they don't they can always go rogue and vote for the Moonshot.

The consequences of that would be very dire though.

Well, Panyaza isn't toeing the party line either if that NEC thing with commissar Snuki is anything to go by.
Councillors were said to have gone to Luthuli House to call on ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula to intervene in the impasse.

News24 understands that ANC councillors argued why an Al Jama-ah candidate should be supported as mayor when Cope’s Collen Makhubela and AIC’s Margaret Arnolds were also in the running.

"The [coalition] framework that the ANC’s NEC adopted is clear and states that the party needs to stop supporting smaller parties as this was going against democratic processes given that the ANC had the most support but was outsourcing this to parties with little support," said one ANC councillor.

"We [ANC councillors] would rather support our own and not have another embarrassing situation where a councillor from a smaller party takes over. There are more suitable candidates should the issue be us having to support a smaller party. We could have gone for the Cope’s Makhubela or even a tried and tested councillor such as Arnolds."

It seems the Doomsday Coalition ain't as solid as they appear...

But going by things like this, I think a tense division might come in ANC regarding coalition partners. Those who want to link up with DA like Snuki vs those who want EFF like Lesufi...

Mmmmm, more by-elections... :coffee:

On a serious note, it'll probably end up like Mangaung with a shitton of councillors being fired...

Looks like the Liberation Movement is taking cadre deployment to new heights, they are now even deploying cadres from other parties, this augurs well for the DA/ANC coalition in 2024.

In her first appearance before the committee in her new portfolio, De Lille clashed with MPs who demanded she axes former DA MP Tim Harris and businessman Zwelibanzi Mntambo, citing a conflict of interest.

It makes the most sense tho, for the biggest party in a coalition to get the mayoralty.

This puppet show Lesufi has been running with EFF has just been a ploy to stay in power to keep EFF onside.

This argument is bit of a double edge sword. The counselor represents the people of that specific ward aswell as the party. Ideally if people voted correctly those interests should align. But 5he people voted wrong.

There is certainly more of an argument that a counselor should do the right thing because they represent actual people and not do stupid stuff to destabilize the municipality.

More so than MPs who represent no actual people.

No it doesn't. Especially it the biggest party offers no value. There "biggest" share of the coalition is worth nothing if they can't make the collision work.

Yes, I really appreciate that's how it's supposed to be in principle, but we all know better. They are very similar to MPs, the fact that we see their faces on election posters makes no difference.

Until such a time where the parties have no power to remove councillors then we'll stay with the problem.

No it doesn't.
It does. It makes nil sense to appoint an oke from an 0.6% one-seater party and hope it'll work cuz he isn't from a "big/biggest party".

We've seen this with Amad in JHB...

In the case of both DA and ANC, without their buy-in (either with or outside of the prospective coalition), there's no feasible coalition, only minority governments.

It's a numbers game.

If they vote for the Moonshot again you fire them again, they will soon start getting the message when poverty gets them, ask the Moonshot councillors who tried to double cross the Moonshot in Tshwane.
If the councilor actually did what the people wanted and communicated it properly he should then be able to run as a independent in the by-election and win.

If anyone wins the wards in MAN from ANC, the ANC loses their majority.

So it doesn't even matter if they vote for Moonshot again or whatever, since if you can't defend those wards, you lose...

The same will happen in JHB, if ANC can't defend their wards...

Compromise is a thing. It happens in all aspects of life. Sport teams sometimes play in a neutral venue. If you and your partners cannot agree on who of you should be mayor then pick a more neutral 3rd party. Just pick someone. But stop fscking it up and blaming the ANC.
