The Johannesburg Council has reconvened for a second attempt to elect a mayor. Talks between the DA and five other parties collapsed on Thursday. Johannesburg has been without a mayor since Thapelo Amad's resignation a week ago.

The DA requested a 30 minute caucus break and Speaker Makhubele has granted it. The sitting will continue at 11:35.

But then that should have been their point of contention, that the PA is too unstable and are only after positions. They would have had a leg to stand on.

Instead they made it about the PA cozying up to the ANC, but haven't said anything on the other parties joining with the ANC. Then they'll look like even bigger hypocrites should they ever have to govern with the ANC.

And that's the problem with the DA, they've always been too focused on being anti-ANC even if it means painting themselves into a corner...

The DA have hopefully decided to support the ASA candidate rather than the stupid show they are pulling with Mpho. It's not as if the coalition's candidate will win so they can buy some political goodwill with the parties they hope to work with in future without actually giving them power.

If there was any chance the ANC and EFF's candidate will lose, this meeting would have been collapsed by those anarchists.

It's what I was saying earlier about principles. They have principles, according to them the biggest party in the coalition should be the Boss.

They can't be seen to not be true to their principles like the ANC so they will stick with them until the bitter end.

Hopefully people catch a wake about this, there's nothing scandalous about compromising in politics, we wouldn't have this wonderful democracy if everyone stood firm and refused to budge on their principles.

Is there a specific reason why DA should support ASA candidate rather than their own ?

They still need the myriad of smaller parties I think but the difference is that the Moonshot is a non starter without the PA.
 
Well they're finally voting, and since there was no bollocks from the ANC/EFF side, its pretty much a given that that little whipper snapper from Al-Jamah will be the new mayor for a few weeks at least.

Al Jama-ah’s Kabelo Gwamanda is Joburg’s new mayor

Gwamanda was voted into power with a whopping 139 votes, after the city was without a mayor for nearly two weeks.

For the next few weeks till he actually opens his mouth and the ANC/EFF have to fire him like they did with the last one.
