Lungile Phenyane has a good chance of snapping up Helen Zille's position. It may change perceptions.

No we have Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Rastafarians, Atheists - in many schools Christians would be in the minority.

Religion has no place in a school assembly, even less so in a manner in which religious divisions are affirmed.

I was a minority in a white school and the Christian bits were great. Everyone else had to go to Bible Studies, and I was just allowed to go to the library and do whatever I wanted. Eventually the librarian took me under her wing and taught me about life.


For those of you who are perverts, I just want to clarify that none of the above implies that I boinked the librarian. She was a sweet old lady.

Who knows but she's got a nice job as an independent consultant. She would make a good candidate for Zille's position, given her credentials.

Not in most of WC (excl. CPT) at least.

There weren't many Hindus and Atheists in my school from what I can remember, it was Christians and then Muslims and then some Jewish kids.

There was no hostility as you're trying to imply.

As I said, in my primary school, that's where anything religion-related started and ended, as soon as the sermon ended they were brought back in as nothing happened, no exclusion or anything else, simply a practical measure. No one's studios imploded or anything.

There was nothing else religious other than that and was secular the rest of the time, other religions were respected too.

I agree that schools should be secular, but there are many private (and public) schools which market themselves as religion-driven schools and they should be allowed to exist.

Zille is 72 years old. Wouldn't it be reasonable if she offers someone else the opportunity?
I think she would then be in great position to expand her mentorship to more young and upcoming DA politicians.

She is by some distance SA's most impressive politician if you look at her overall record (look how she made CT, then WC a DA fortress and grew the DA's national vote share). The DA was going no-where with Mmusi. Zille has brought back discipline to the party. The DA was losing by-elections left, right, and center before she came back. In 2022 and 2023, the DA's had solid victories in many by-elections.
