City Press understands that Phalatse wanted to contest for the Johannesburg caucus leader’s position against Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, but withdrew to focus on beating Msimanga for the provincial leader’s position.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku was elected unopposed for the position, for which nominations closed on Wednesday.

Mpho is no longer the DA JHB leader.

However, he faces a strong challenge against Phalatse, Khume Ramulifho, Ghaleb Cachalia, Kayser-Echeozonjoku and Dennis Ryder in the upcoming election, which is scheduled to be held at the beginning of August.

Ramulifho is a DA member of the provincial legislature in Gauteng; Cachalia is an MP in Cape Town; Kayser-Echeozonjoku is a councillor and incoming caucus leader in Johannesburg; and Ryder is an MP and regional chairperson in the Vaal.

His name has also been mentioned in connection with the deputy chairperson’s position alongside former DA Gauteng leader Pogiso Mthimunye.

So those are the challengers to Solly. I don't know if he will get a second term...

City Press also understands that the majority of Tshwane branches are lobbying the city’s former speaker, Katlego Mathebe, to stand for the position.

Insiders say Mathebe’s joining the race might detract from Msimanga’s support, as they come from the same region.

Was she ever the DA JHB leader? I don't ever recall her being elected to any senior position within the party. Unless this caucus thing is an internal council thing where you are elected by fellow councillors.

I think he and others who are calling for the return of the Scorpions are totally missing the point, what Zuma did with his state capture is to capture the NPA and the Hawks, if the Scorpions were still there they would have been captured as well. The Hawks and the NPA are suffering from that capture, which would still have happened even if they were called the Scorpions.

Usually, when I talk about "[x party] [y place] leader" regarding munis, I mean caucus leaders/leaders in council, it's just simpler.

Not really, no. If the Scorpions were around, they would've caught Zuma out early and got rid of him. Why do you think the ANC just went for the kill/dissolution of the Scorpions, instead of leaving them around and capturing them later like NPA and SAPS?

The Scorpions posed a threat to the ANC and uBaba, a possibly uncapturable threat...

Because they were Mbeki was the President the not Zuma, what makes you think they would not have gone the same way as other law enforcement agencies under Zuma?

As I said, if Motlanthe didn't follow ANC orders and kept Scorpions around, they would've eventually gotten to Zuma.

I remember reading in Gangster State, that if Scorpions wasn't disbanded and Zuma still did all the **** he did, they would've ended him by at least 2011 (would've been only two years into his first term).

And I reiterate, if the Scorpions had weak points and could be simply captured like NPA, SSA, etc by uBaba, why dissolve it and not just capture it later? And the "MBEKI BAD" motive isn't enough.

The Scorpions posed a threat to uBaba and ANC's "time to eat" tendencies... Hence, they opted for the dissolution and of course, selling the Scorpions as being Mbeki's Gestapo (i.e. MBEKI BAD). And what's hilariously ironic is that the SSA became Zuma's secret police/Gestapo during State Capture.

And you know what's the trick, it would not be because they are called the Scorpions, it would be because they operated under a different environment then. They started on a clean slate, had well trained investigators and prosecutors who knew their job.

Bring back the same Scorpions now and they would not be the same Scorpions they were back then. There is nothing you are going to achieve differently by bringing them back after things have been messed up to this level.

It would be a good first step to revitalise the rule of law in SA. Punt Hawks into the sun, and bring back the Scorpions.

I hope they can if they are brought back someday, that a new law(s) could be made to stop them from being so easily disbanded in future. Maybe make it a Chapter 9 institution?
