In theory SOEs aren't there to return equity. In a developmental economy, they should support development and provide jobs. Sustainable jobs. But yes, you have to agree that they not only goggled up billions but actually destroyed value.

Transnet (that's in addition to losing mining companies at least 80bn in 21/22)
Constrained or lost production affects mining companies, the economy and fiscus more broadly as SA loses out on potential employment and tax revenue. The council estimates that without logistics constraints, mining could have added another 50 000 jobs and increased the tax take for 2021 by about R27 billion.

Precisely. They're meant to be the backbone of SA's economy but they're more the burden of SA's economy at this point...

Well, Mmusi was parachuted up the rankings. Some people join from other political parties and immediately get good posts like Cachalia etc like anything, it seems to be based upon who you know.

Let's be practical here: do you really think in a country with massive poverty that a political party hoping to lead a coalition government in 2024 can say they will cut grants to the bone?
Also unlike in the UK, for example, you cannot really live off grants "as a lifestyle" in SA. The monthly amount is very small.

Absolutely not...

I would expect them to be considerably more efficient with Grants though, making sure they're paid to valid people and such. It would actually be interesting to do a Grant audit at some point to see what percentage is paid to people who shouldn't be getting it. (I don't expect it to be a huge percentage, but it will still be a significant number of people)

Trying to please both their right wing and centre supporters was never going to be easy.

The government did not have a way of managing even the transitional R350 grants, it was revealed that plenty people who are employed some by government were getting the grants, it must be a mess on the child grants.

There are basic controls the government seems to be unwilling to implement. How is it possible to even steal (like the ones stolen from a police safe) those cards. Or make it possible for someone to own a stack of them?

Absolutely, and for me that is one of the primary things a "new" government must get right in terms of the grants system.

We need to be as sure as possible that the vast majority of grants are going to recipients who deserve them, and also anyone who is found to be benefiting from a grant that they shouldn't must be fired (if they're a government employee) and prosecuted for fraud/theft instantly.
