I guess economics has never been the strong point of leftists. If they did understand economics, they wouldn't be leftists.

At that level, per finance sources, off a reported $250M production cost and $140M global marketing spend, The Little Mermaid could very well break-even. However, anything in the low $400M global threshold and this fish is apt to be sinking to a loss of around $20M.

And I might add that these films need to do more than just break even. They actually need to turn a substantial profit elsewise they are simply a gigantic waste of time.

Lets compare this to a decidedly unwoke remake:
Budget$84.21–95 million[5][6]
Box office$542.4 million[5]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_(2015_American_film)

how you figure that?
Box office: $467.7 million
Budget: 250 million USD

I was basing that off the tweet with $163m box office, not the exact figure for right now.

$467m is not a horrid figure, but it works out to a $77m profit. I would hazard a guess that that won't be seen wonderfully by the studios...

I'd wait and see. It was only released about 3 weeks ago. Sure the anti-woke mob can be a bit influential but if the film is good in its own right then it'll do well despite what the Gilead generals wish.

An example why box office isn't the final profit/loss

the production budget alone for Avatar 2 is a whopping $460 million
James Cameron said that Avatar 2 needed to make $2 billion at the box office to be profitable

There is a youtube video with a break down. Paying the cinemas % of money , marketing , conversion from different currencies etc... it's not just look at the box office $$$.

So just doing some digging beyond the basic box office figures..

I'm seeing number floating around of around $560m as the movies breakeven point, and these sorts of movies don't have a huge long tail at the cinemas. They usually fall off the radar within 2 months and the last month is very very slow.

No much digging. I googled the movie name and the budget and box office figures show up in one of the summaries at the top.

She is big into the "Go woke, go broke" movement. She even released a book called "Stay woke, go broke".

And so far she may not be far off the mark with The Little Mermaid.. its definitely not going to be an amazing profitable movie....

More must be done to encourage the use of mother tongue education in schools because it works well, believes Angie Motshekga, minister of basic education. Regarding the status of mother tongue education, she referred to the Eastern Cape, "which is also performing relatively well". A study was carried out over 12 years with one group of pupils who were taught in Xhosa during their entire school career and another group who were only taught in English (which is not their mother tongue).
"The results were incredible. It was clear that those who were taught mathematics in Xhosa performed better than those who were taught in English. What was also informative was that the very group that was taught in Xhosa also performed better in English compared to those who used English as a medium of instruction.
"This says a lot about how important mother tongue education is."
It's strange to see Angie speak sense for once.

The Northern Alliance, a NMB political party with its origins in the metro's northern suburbs, held its second annual electoral conference on Saturday to elect new leaders in its top structures. But according to Gary van Niekerk, who said on Sunday that he is still the party's "legitimate" leader, this conference was "illegal".
Infighting in the NA in NMB... Typical small municipal party antics...

After another young man drowned in the Witherow dam quarry in Heidedal, Bloemfontein, the DA insists that something be done urgently to prevent another tragedy there. The body of Dustin Kukari (26) was removed from the dam on Tuesday, says Attie Terblanche, DA councilor for the Mangaung metro, in a statement. It was discussed at the latest council meeting on Thursday.

All paywalled.

Yeah, but there are other costs to be factored in... which is partly where that $560m figure seems to come from.

Nyati overlapped these okes with ease. Many seem to agree if you look at the comments of the video...
