But check this out, if this threshold is implemented...
TSH - 16 parties to 5
JHB - 19 parties to 8
CPT - 17 parties to 9
NMB - 13 parties to 10
BUFFALO - 9 parties to 4
ETH - 25 parties to 8 parties
EKH - 16 parties to 8
MAN - 9 parties to 7
As you can see, if something as simple as a 1% threshold is implemented, the amount of parties represented in council in metros on avg is reduced by at least 50%... Making things more stable.

Yup. Usually once the DA gets in with a stable coalition (or even better, by themselves) and have the freedom to operate unhindered for the full term, the ANC vote goes into decline. Wouldn't be surprised if DA wins Umngeni with a clear (55%+) majority in 2026. He will influence people to vote for the DA in the national and provincial elections next year and until the ANC elects another Zulu as leader - not likely for the next decade - the ANC will be in long term decline in the province.

They do somehow despite only getting 47.4% of the vote. 13/25 councillors. The ANC greatly fears dropping further as happened in CT, where they are hopelessly uncompetitive these days and have been since 2011.

It's less representative though. It makes fewer votes count.

5/13 wards were DA.
DA got the majority PR vote for the remaining 12 seats (they got 8, and the other four got split up between EFF and ANC, if you calculate).

I mean just look at the reduction of parties with just 1% threshold.
Tbh I'd rather take stable councils and coalitions with a minute electoral threshold discarding a handful of votes, than "representative" but chaotic councils and coalitions. Surely, a 25-party council like ETH isn't sustainable, right?

Higher number of parties mostly means less stability and even less service delivery, however. So that is the trade-off. I support this notion from the ANC and DA. Really tired of one or two councilor parties holding the bigger parties hostage.

I prefer the natural threshold of percentage require to achieve a seat, in the 400 seat National Assembly, that's around 0.25%
The threshold helps bigger parties and drives out small ones, you can call that stable, but it is less democratic.
