I think most of the spoilt ballots are deliberate spoiling of the ballot.
Bloody stoopid to stand in a queue for 3 to 4 hours to waste your vote.

It's called sending a message by the proponents. I haven't kept track but I think they did well this election, over 200k sounds like a lot.

We will never know for as long as this stupid rule exists. Same like you can't check the stats for a VD.

Most of it, people have been successfully betting on the lotto with the same requirement to keep your mark within the box, so I doubt it's anything new to anyone.
